Somehow, the novelty of magic that was so fresh and new in Draco's mind when he had started his career at Hogwarts had slowly been sucked out of him. He, as a true pure-blood citizen, was raised around magic and had seen some pretty impressive results from the wand.

With so many muggles running around though, it just wasn't quite as fun.

Draco stood, looking out of a large window in a northern corridor. His wand was in his hand and he twirled it among his finger. His left hand was busy propping his head up as he looked out the window, so his right occupied itself twirling the wand.

Brooding was something Zelgadiss was intimately familiar with; he did enough of it himself. He was also, however, fully aware of just how unhealthy it was.

He leaned against the wall beside the window. "Problems?"

"I don't need company-" Draco turned to the voice and stopped, horrified. Dim house-elves and fire-breathing dragons were things Draco had been raised with. He wasn't alarmed by mermaids or giant squids. When he was young, he even wanted a pet Basilisk. He had never seen, however, something that looked like what he was standing next to.

In fear of some sort of retaliation, Draco casually took two steps to the right, away from the thing. This would give him time to draw his wand if need be.

Zel froze. Nobody had reacted to him like that in so long he'd almost forgotten that anyone would react to him like that. When he finally understood what was going on, he relaxed. "Sorry; I'd kind of forgotten that my looking like this upsets people. I'm not going to hurt you, trust me."

"Just stay there," Draco told him quietly, sounding firm with his words but not rude. He looked the thing over and was still surprised by his appearance.

"What are you?" He made no attempts to hide his disgust.

Zel sighed. "I'm a chimera - a magically-created combination of several different creatures. The spells necessary are actually illegal, but that never stops some people." Quietly, he added, "I used to be human."

Draco had heard of Chimera's but this is not what they looked like. The illustrations in his pictures books as a child were far from the thing in front of him. Draco decided not to argue.

"Well you're not anymore," He pointed out with a snort. "You're far from it. What unfortunate things happened to turn you?"

Zel rolled his eyes. "Oh, thank you, I hadn't noticed. As for what happened to me..." He sighed. "A sorcerer called Rezo the Red Priest and a teenaged idiot by the name of Zelgadiss Graywords."

Draco frowned. "I immediately regret asking." Draco told him honestly. There was something calm about the boy's voice though that made Draco forget his retorts. The thing, while hideous, didn't seem malicious or too proud like the rest of the student body with pointy hair and large, expressive eyes.

"I'm Draco Malfoy, by the way. What should I call you?"

The chimera smirked in a distinctly ironic manner. "My name is Zelgadiss Graywords."

Draco managed to allow a laugh to slip out.

"Hi Zelgadiss," He decided not to comment on the strange name. "So why are you a teenaged idiot? "

"It was five years ago; I'm not a teenager anymore. But the 'idiot' part was mostly because my idea of a shortcut to power was to ask someone who'd been possessed by a mazoku to give me that power." Zel looked down at himself. "This is the result."

"I'm sorry. How bloody awful." Draco realized it could have sounded either sympathetic or abusive. He chose not to specify his intention.

"As bad as that is, if it would get me out of this damn polluted castle, I'd take that as punishment."

Zel looked around absently. "Polluted? The house elves keep the place pretty clean, don't they?" He purposefully ignored the possibility that Draco could have meant something else.

After an impatient exhale, Draco looked back up.

"I didn't mean like the weather, the atmosphere. I meant as in the headmaster allowed anyone in it bloody well feels like!" Draco tried to keep his tone calm.

"I think it's the Hat that does that, actually. The thing's insane, I swear." Of course, Zel thought this of quite a lot of people. Still, it was usually accurate.
