Kusuriyuri looks up from where he's been hand shaping rows in the dirt. "Plant them?" he suggests.

L isn't immature enough to roll his eyes at Kusuriyuri, but it's a close thing.

"Where, A? It's your garden. We'll probably need to shovel deeper holes for the tree and bushes."

He's already pointed out the spots for the bushes, and A knows where he wants the tree. "Right here, for the pear tree... for Eratosthenes," he says, pointing to a spot by the inner circle in the garden. "Where it will cast shade when people rest or picnic."

If L did not wish to be twitted, he wouldn't ask questions he didn't complete and that had such obvious answers. "Then, let us dig a hole for the tree. And, then plant the roses and then the rest. We will need to also get water for them to drink once they are planted." He rises, brushing his hands off and picks up a couple of buckets.

"How deep should I dig, A?" he asks, moving to the spot indicated. Giving instructions, L figures, will be good for him, thus the questions with 'such obvious answers.'

A doesn't know either, but fortunately each plant is equipped with an instruction sheet, and A reads it aloud to L.

"That's not so very deep, is it?" he asks anxiously afterward. It wouldn't do for L to have to work too hard.

Kusuriyuri returns with water in the buckets and resumes making rows in the dirt by hand. There are tools he could use, but he prefers this and it gives him some chance to rest. Again, he hums under his breath. If asked, he will assist the other two, but they appear to have hole digging well in hand.

"It's deep enough," says L, as he works. "I wonder how long it will take to actually have pears?"

From:

"Soon, I hope." A's grinning broadly. "You'll like pears, won't you? They're sweet enough?"

A had fruit with most meals growing up, and it's a level of sweetness he's used to.

"And, what would my deshi have planted here?" Kusuriyuri asks as he finishes up the third row. on the far end of the garden from where they are planting the tree.

L nods to A's question, and lets him just answer Kusuriyuri, while L digs.

From:

A's holing the pear tree in readiness for the hole, so he merely turns instead of running over.

"The calendula, sensei." Fitting, for Kusuriyuri to plant something so prized as a healing herb.

"As you say," Kusuriyuri murmurs. He stands, using a ladle to pour water over the rows he made before beginning to plant the brightly colored flowers. He hadn't ever seen as many blooming plants before they were planted before, but it was a delight to work with them.

"I don't know if we remembered to get the pot for the catnip," says L, suddenly alarmed.

From:

"Oh!" A frowns, distraught, then...

"Do you think it would work if we transfigured some rocks? It's a simple change of shape."

From:

"As long as the roots are contained but the soil can drain, it is good," Kusuriyuri assures him. "It can be contained without a barrier, but it is far simpler and more sure with a container."

He continues planting, carefully spacing the plants and murmuring over each as he does.

"We might as well try." A can. L doesn't stop digging.

Setting the tree down, A steps out of the garden and hunts down rocks, the largest he can easily carry. He sets them in the area beside the calendula Kusuriyuri's planting, fitting them together like a puzzle until the space is covered, and casts a charm, brows knitting in concentration.

It's a difficult spell, and A slumps, half-collapsing for a moment, when it's done, but the stones have become a massive stone planter, the bottom dotted with small drainage holes.

Kusuriyuri stands and encourages A to sit. "Most impressive," he murmurs. He goes to the water buckets and brings over a ladle full. Once A takes the ladle from him, he goes back to planting, keeping an eye on his student.

"Very aptly done," L agrees, smiling at him.

The praise makes A flush, and he begins shoveling dirt into the planter. Slowly at first - it was a tiring charm, but he regains his pace readily enough.

"Thank you."

After reassured that A was fine, Kusuriyuri finished planting the calendula and then watered them. "I will bring more water." he says as he rises and picks up the now empty buckets.

"There we are," says L, stepping away from his tree-ready hole, to help A.

"Use the excess from mine. Here's a neat puzzle; how much dirt is there in a hole two feet, by three feet, by one foot."

"It's a hole," A tells him. "The only dirt in it is what you put there."

He's used to logic puzzles.

"And Eratosthenes goes into this hole, and then dirt."
