Application: Dawnstar, Legion of Super-Heroes

Dawnstar stepped into the time portal the Legion had opened in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, leaving the 21st century behind. Light enveloped her, and she stepped out...

...into a cold stone room, facing a wooden table with a quill pen and a stack of parchment sheets.

She turned her head to the right, then to the left, and back to face front. To a casual observer it would look as though she were perfectly still, but in fact she was quite busy. She extended her mutant tracking sense out around her in all directions, plotting a grid and placing references upon it. She marked two individuals known to her within the building, Star Boy and Brainiac 5, and recognized two more - Superman and Batman - present but muffled in a way she had never encountered. She also sensed dozens of energy signatures unknown to her, and dozens more muffled signals in the building. The number was difficult to pin down, as if occupancy were somehow in flux.

Earth. Scotland. But when? On impulse she focused her enhanced senses upward to the planet Thanagar, her temporary home until a few days before; searched for one energy signature dear to her, and found it. Still in the 21st century, then. Is this what happened to Thom?

Then and only then did she turn her attention to the table before her.

1. What is your favorite cheese? Why is it your favorite?
"There was a cheese on Thanagar I liked. My...friend...there used it in her cooking often. I do not know its name."

2. Who would you kill first, Barney or Carrottop?
Her expression was frosty. "I am Legion. Legionnaires do not kill."

3. What time is it where you are?
A corner of her mouth quirked upward ever so slightly. "That is an excellent question. One of many I would like answered, such as what this place is, how I came to be here, and why."

4. If you were Albus Dumbledore returned from the dead, which member of the Order of the Phoenix would you sexually harass? How would you harass them? If you are Albus Dumbledore, please answer as if you were Sirius Black.
She rolled her eyes and gave a put-upon sigh.

"Wildfire wrote this, didn't he? Harassment is his line, as I well recall from my Academy days. Is this all some elaborate trick of Drake's? Queen Projectra could create the illusion of - all this, but surely she would find a prank beneath her?"

5. If you are pushing to be in:

A. Slytherin - please state the clever, witty name of the bar in which you bartend, in the dark.
A tiny sigh this time. "I am not clever, or witty." Her mouth creased in a thin smile. "The Reservation."

B. Gryffindor – Debate whether Harry should ultimately end up married to Fred or George. Use examples from a variety of world mythologies to bolster your argument.
"I know little mythology, and only this Harry can know his own heart. We of Starhaven make a Grand Tour of the galaxy when we come of age to find our true soulmate."

Dawnstar grimaced, ever so slightly, remembering her own Grand Tour. She had found her soulmate, sure enough, but a reverent, spiritual or dignified experience it was not. More like the old slapstick comedies Bouncing Boy was so fond of watching.

C. Ravenclaw – You guys are supposed to be smart. Explain why my desk is inundated with paperwork at all times, even though I’m constantly disposing of it.
She shrugged, disinterested. "If this is when I think it is, you have not yet put complete faith in electronic data storage over paper. That will come, in time."

D. Hufflepuff – Prove you are not useless.
One eyebrow raised. "I have worked as a pathfinder to support my family since I was a small child. I learned combat skills and strategy at the Legion Academy. As a Legionnaire I have helped the team defeat many criminals, would-be conquerors and other villains. My powers were even of some small use in resolving the first Crisis. Will that do?"

6. Offer a bribe to the members of this community so that they will not squib you. Items used in bribery do not necessarily have to belong to the person offering the bribe. Do not threaten us rather than offering a bribe. A threat indicates you either don't really want to be here, or don't have enough sense to answer the question properly. The hat will automatically squib you, regardless of other votes, if you do.
Dawnstar glanced down at her skintight, fringed bodysuit and boots. No pockets, no storage - deep space flying meant traveling light. She had given away her Legion flight ring once, but since the Justice League returned it to her, she would not make that mistake again.

She reached up and took out a small copper capsule tucked into her headband, hidden beneath her hair. She made it expand into a telescoping wand with a rounded top - a handheld lightning rod. With a small shrug she placed it on the table. It was useless to her now; she only hoped Wildfire made it home to Brainy with the right one...

"I am a deep-space pathfinder, as I said. The Legion gave me a way to apply my powers to something more meaningful than just earning a fee," she replied.

"Between other worlds...Interesting. I have been to a few such places. What is yours like?"

"That certainly sounds like an interesting job you have. Its good to have work that keeps you busy; I should know. As for my home... Its part of every other universe, but doesn't have a central point, exactly. My home is directly related to my job. I regulate the balance between universes by guiding heroes such as yourself."

"I think I see. How do you know...are you just drawn to your tasks, or do you receive instructions from another like you when you are needed?"

A thought popped into her head. "Are you here now on such a job? If there is danger here..."

"Most of the time I just end up in a new place before I know it, and from there whatever I'm supposed to solve makes itself clear to me. And I'm always on the job."

"Less a job than a state of mind, then." She remembered Duo Damsel once saying that Legionnaires always thought of themselves as Legionnaires, even when they went to inactive status. "Have you found your purpose in this place? In fact, what is this place? I've seldom seen anything like it."

"This is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It seems that people come here to learn spells and magic, among other things. I'm not one-hundred percent sure why I'm here yet. I followed a suspiscious man here from my last place of employment and I expect he is up to no good."

"There's always at least one of those about no matter where you go, it seems," she replied with a small sigh. "I did not mean to come here, though - I was headed home, to the 31st century. How...?"

"From what I can tell, some people choose to come here, some come here unaware that its happening, and some come here when they die. I suppose it didn't catch me off guard that I was suddenly here because of my usual mode of travel."

She nodded. "I was attempting an unusual mode of travel myself. Time travel has been known to go wrong before. I thought perhaps it had again." She looked around the room. "Finding that I was brought here by someone's will is a bit disturbing."

Time travel was a lot easier when it was as easy as breathing, Antubis thought. He decided not to say such out loud.

"I don't really know if its by someone's will, or the place's itself. I'm guessing there are better authorities on that besides myself. But as you are here, I can tell you people get sorted into houses based on their characteristics. I'm stuck on where I would put you. Would you call yourself more heroic or more intelligent?"

Antubis chuckled. "You're welcome - I think. Its a strange place we've fallen into, thats for sure. As for me, I was voted into Ravenclaw, a house more known for its studious and intellectual nature. I suppose that fits as well as anything. Gryffindor probably wouldn't fit me as keeping reality balanced means I need to do all sorts of things, good and bad."

Antubis smiled, a slightly scary expression conisdering his current form. "Here, however, I've come to balance things on the side of good, as far as I know. I don't doubt people with a Gyffindor-like temperment may come in handy down the road somewhere."

"Excellent. I'm not exactly sure what's going on yet, but I'm sure it will be interesting and a lot of hard work besides. I'll keep your offer in mind."

She nodded. "My main task will be to find a way home. The Legion was far from its full strength when we left the 31st century. They will need as many of us as they can get. Perhaps the magic they teach here will provide a way...certainly this era's technology is a poor hope."
