On Sparta! ((closed RP for Mello, L, A, Kusuriyuri, Near, Matt))

So, Matt set up the time and L said he wanted to spar before hand. Fine with me. I was curious as to which of us was better, anyways. I mean, it went without saying I was better than Matt and Near because they didn't really practice before, but between L and me I wanted to know which of us was better.

He'd arranged with me to arrive early at the dojo I'd manage to find. A and Kusuriyuri would be with him. I just hoped his trained monkey didn't hex me while we practiced. Last thing I wanted was outside interference when such an important question was on the line.

Though it'd been a couple of days and I'd gotten both Near and Matt up to something that might be called a self-defense level mostly by beating them up for a couple of hours and then throwing hexes at each other, I was still edgy. There were some lines that just should never be crossed.

Threatening my best friend was one of those lines. By extension, he'd also threatened my lover because he's gone after L.

So, now, I'm warming up, dressed in the loose clothing I wore as a kid at Wammy's because it was easier to practice in than leather.

"I'm good with observation, anyway. Kusuriyuri, I think the idea might be that - well, you're obviously going to be pretty good with potions, but since you're the only one here that B doesn't know... maybe you could play a part in both?" He glances at L, hoping he's not misinterpreted.

"Another thing is the possibility of creating spells to suit our needs. I've mostly been creating stuff with runes, but --" Matt stops, suddenly. "Holy fucking shit I'm an idiot. I can make us some bindrunes. One for A, at the very least."

"You're only an idiot because you make yourself one, Matt." I only say it because he's my best friend and it needs to be said. "Bindrunes? Would that be like a warding charm or something like that?"

"And, I think Matt and L are right. The teacher is the only one of us B doesn't know, unless he's been watching us recently." It'd be nice if he had a shorter name.

At least A looks calmer and Near seems a little more relaxed, but that might be the medicine starting to work. He still feels too warm. When we're done here, I'm going to make him rest, as much as I believe we should practice. He's not up for it.

"Are bindrunes difficult to make? How effective are they?" So far, their classes had mostly concentrated on the symbology of runes, and Near's mainly been studying charms.

The medication does seem to be helping, but Near's still feeling rather wretched. He sneezes again.

He nods to Kusuriyuri; they've said exactly what he meant. And asks Matt,

"I have never heard of those. Effectiveness aside, what do they actually accomplish?"

"The wards I employ can act as a barrier. Though, I only know that they react to humans at this point. I do not know if they will act as a barrier. It would be most interesting to experiment, Matt."

He turns back to L. "I shall be honoured to be of service. A is my deshi, my student. It is my duty to him."

That's not something A was expecting, and he tilts his face towards Kusuriyuri, giving him a vague, surprised smile. As shaken as he is, the unprecedented feeling of being cared for, of being looked after, is a marvel he treasures.

From his place leaning against the wall, Matt gives Mello a rude gesture. (Because Mello is his best friend, and middle fingers mean love.)

"It's a bindrune that's on the case of your laptop," Matt tells L. To everyone else:

"I've never used them on people... they're not all that difficult to create, you just need to combine them in the right way to get the right meaning. If that makes sense. It'd be like a charm - a physical charm he'd need to wear." He spreads his hands. "I honestly couldn't say how well it'd work, but it's worth a try, right?"

I ignore his gesture, mostly. I just roll my eyes at him. "Okay, then. You and Kusu work on that. Kusu, Near and A will work on potions. You and L will work on observation. And, I'll practice with everyone, including A, because it's possible that an effective defense will be as helpful as everything else."

I make Near look at me. "But, you, after this meeting, are going to bed if I have to carry you there and make you stay. Practicing now is a bad idea for you. I can practice with either L or A after this. Either way. Both is fine, too."

Near starts to laugh at Mello's spate of order-giving, but it turns to coughing.

Bed. Yes. It's not the usual reason Mello sends him to bed, but it's just as valid.

"Take Near home," L suggests, "I think we have accomplished all that we can for now. I would appreciate talking to you later about the specifics of the case, but now does not seem to be the time."

He wouldn't want to, with A here.

"If A is amiable, we can begin looking at the various potions to see if there are common ingredients." He is amused by Mello's order giving, but as they seem to be sensible, he doesn't feel inclined to disagree at this point. "And, the medicine." He holds out his hand, a largish packet in it. "A measure," there is a small scoop in his other hand, "in a cup of hot water to be given not more than every four hours as symptoms warrant." He, at no point, physically mixed the ingredients, but they are the same as in the tea in served Near.

"Yes," A says, sitting up a little. "I'd like to look. I want to learn it, even if it's not... even if it doesn't help for this. I want to know."

"Okay." Matt gives a lazy salute. He's the only one out of them who's actually used to taking orders from Mello.

I urge Near up. "I think we're good here, then. If we need to meet again, there's owls and/or we can pass messages. Matt, I'll see you tomorrow morning. A, you can let Matt or Ryuzaki know when a good time is. Ryuzaki, next time we practice, I'll fill you in." I take the medicine from Kusu. "Thank you. I'll make sure he takes it."

I wrap my arm around Near's waist. "Unless anyone has anything else?"

Near lets himself be guided. He might object, but he realizes he's just not in any condition to do much. Was there something in medication to make him groggy, or was that just from being ill?

"I do, but if A is staying with Kusuriyuri, then we can address it while we walk." Reluctantly, he eases his grip on the younger man.

At least he seems like he's going to be alright.

Kusuriyuri is pleased that A reacts well to having a purpose. "Then, we shall go to the library and discover what we can in the books."

Matt's been standing the whole time, but he pushes himself off the wall he's been leaning against.
