Near is, indeed, bent over his legos, hair falling into his eyes as he stacks them. "Hello, Wishbone! I am sure the legos feel safer with you around."

As they should be! Wishbone spoke with a lot more bravado than he should exhibit, considering Mello found him cowering under the couch.

Well, since you won't let me have chocolate, can I have a bone? My old one is worn out.

I manage to hide my smirk at Wishbone's voice. "Yeah, I'll get you a bone. You sure you don't want anything, Near?"

From:

Near looks up from his legos. "A roast beef sandwich? With horseradish. And a glass of apple juice."

From:

"One bone, roast beef with horseradish and apple juice and one hot milk. I'll be back in a bit." I turn a glare on Wishbone, "Don't you let anything get to his legos, or else..." I'll tell everyone how I found you. Some threat.

Right! Wishbone sat perfectly still, not even wagging his tail, just keeping his eye on those legos.

From:

"You are a good protector," Near said approvingly. He slid a green brick into place with a firm snap.

"Have you seen anything interesting lately?"

There was something loud and scary in the Sorting Room. I came here to hide from it.

From:

"Did you see it, or only hear it? What about it scared you?"

It could be something, it could be nothing.

From:

I just heard it, but it was loud and creepy, and I don't like loud and creepy noises.

From:

"Better to get away, then. If you keep yourself safe you can regroup, consider your options."

I didn't see who did it, though, so I don't know who to avoid.

"But you heard it," Near pointed out. "So if you hear something that reminds you of it, you'll know to stay away."

Oh. Okay then! Wishbone wagged his tail again...but he made sure that he was away from the legos before doing so.

"And you must tell me about anything you see that you think is dangerous."

All right then! I'll be on the lookout.

From:

"Brave Sir Wishbone," Near said approvingly, and patted Wishbone's head before returning to carefully placing the lego bricks.

I should have taken the basket. I kicked on the door, both my hands full with two thermoses and a sandwich and everything else the elves insisted I needed. And a bone. "Oi, open up already!"

He's back! Wishbone stood up and wagged his tail again

Grinning at both Mello's tone and Wishbone's, Near made his way to the door, opening it to let Mello in.

"I trust foraging was uneventful?"

"Rather," I replied dryly, handing him what I could without dropping it. I snagged the bone off the top. The elves insisted on a meaty one and wrapped it.

I squatted down. "So, tell me. Are the legos safe?" I say in my most severe tone.

I need mental help. This place is getting to me.

They are. Not one fell. Wishbone said in his sternest tone...but he couldn't resist the bone for long, and dove for it.

Laughing, Near made sure to lean out of Wishbone's way. Not smart to get between a dog and his bone! "Wishbone is an excellent guard."
