Outside was intimidating. The sky was too big and formless, the wind seemed to come from all directions at once, and the ground was lumpy and uneven under his feet.

But L thought he could be brave. L wanted him to be brave. And A has his wand, after all, and a growing arsenal of hexes to go with it (even if he hasn't actually tested most of them yet).

And so he's exploring the outside of the castle now. The sun is out this time, and it's already warmer than it was when L took him wand-shopping.

And there is new green grass, smelling so fresh and clean, and there are tiny flowers dotting the grass. The daisies A knows, and the foxglove, but botany was not something he studied much and he can't identify any of the others.

But oh, all those tiny shivering alive things in all the terrifying rush of air!

It's a sort of peace he can barely recognize.

Well, that's a relief. Matt wasn't sure if L had gotten his owl, but if A spoke to him anyway it was alright.

"Awesome. I bet he was proud, right? You've hexed Mello and B now, and neither of them are exactly soft touches."

(He knows he probably sounds a bit patronising towards A, but he doesn't mean it. It's just difficult to know how to be gentle towards him; he doesn't want to upset the guy. It sounds like he's been through a lot.)

"There's one that makes you vomit slugs," A whispers delightedly.

"Slugs?" Matt blinks, then laughs. He'd been imagining things a bit more - deadly, really. "So what would happen if you cast that one right after the freezing one?"

"Ohhhh..." A's eyes light up, imagining. "If you made them lie on their back, yes, yes, oh yes...!"

"They might choke," Matt points out. "But I suppose that's what the no-kill rule is for."

Not that he would blame A for wanting to kill the sick little bastard.

"A waste, oh, a waste," A mouthed. "But to see it, the retching and the slugs boiling out, yes yes yes oh yes... almost, very almost as good as blood."

"... um."

That wasn't that pleasant an image. And Matt can't really see the similarity between blood and slugs.

The eagerness is a bit creepy, too.

"You're keeping yourself safe, though, right?"

"I learned a spell to block a hex, if I can say it fast enough." He's still embarrassed about having flubbed it the first time. "And I am keeping Schrodinger safe too. I found her a collar, and a nametag."

"That's good. How is she?"

It kind of sucks that A should even have to 'keep himself safe'.

"And listen. If B - comes after you again, or anything like that, you can... me and Mello would help you too. Not just L."

Not that it would help much, what with the no-kill rule and all, but Matt does have a gun.

"I would have brought her out with me, I think, if I had known how nice it can be out here. She would like to jump at the grass when it blows in the wind."

He looks away, chewing his lip. "He wouldn't... he only looks for me when I'm alone. Not if anyone else is there."

"I don't normally like cats," Matt tells him. "But I like Schrodinger. I think she'd enjoy it outside too."

Matt frowns, thinking. They can't exactly stay with A all the time. "After, then. He shouldn't be doing that - picking on you like that," he adds, in case A isn't comfortable knowing what Matt's guessed. "It wouldn't be right, if he keeps thinking that he can away with it."

"I'll hex him again," A says, sounding fiercely glad at the prospect. "I'll learn more."

Matt nods. "Yeah. But it might help if he knows more people don't agree with him. That more people think he should leave you alone."

"B doesn't care," A stares at him, mildly astonished. "B would think it was funny. B doesn't care what he thinks."

"Mello and I have wands, too," Matt reminds him quietly.

"But you wouldn't be there when..."

"I know. But listen - if he tries it again, you hex the hell out of him and then - if you want - tell us, and we'll do the same."

"I hexed him last time," A says dreamily. "Oh, so very nice... but he didn't know, didn't know it was coming. He does now."

"But you know more of them now. He might not expect that."

"And I want to surprise him." A's eyes took on a dreamy look once more.

Slightly worrying, but... no, fuck it, if he was in A's place he'd probably feel the same.

He might not talk about it in such a creepy way, that's all.

"Apart from that, though - how're things? Schrodinger's doing good... have you been to any of the classes?"

"Not classes, no," A says quietly, "But I will. I talked to someone who is teaching me about plants."
