Open RP at the Quidditch Pitch!

Matt knows, intellectually, that it's only through making mistakes that you learn, that every wrong turn is a lesson and every blah blah blah. But growing up with kids like Mello and Near makes it difficult to believe that kind of thing.

So it's with a certain amount of (well-hidden) nervousness that he heads down to the Quidditch pitch early one morning. There's a couple of spare school brooms. He hates that it's so exposed - if he messes up, there's no way to hide it.

"Up," he says, and a broom leaps into his hand. He walks to the edge of the pitch, mounts the broom, and pushes off.

... wow.

Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea after all.

If he gets high enough, he will eventually see L. Who is not on the Quidditch pitch, but on the grass, stretching. And then fighting invisible foes off.

Or rather, practicing, dignified and rationally. (But yes, with a vivid imagination.)

The caution is wearing off pretty rapidly as he realises that the broom isn't as uncomfortable as he would have imagined, and controlling it is more intuitive than he might have thought. You lean forward, it goes faster. You pull to one side, that's where it goes. It's not rocket science.

Eventually he's soaring upwards, and it's sheer luck that he spots a figure sort of... lashing about on the grass. Huh. He moves closer to investigate, still at fantastic height, circling a a terrific speed.

The colour of the blue sweater he's still wearing should be a pretty good identity tip off. He isn't moving seriously enough to take it off.

Obviously, he can't hear Matt approaching, and people don't tend to look up. Especially not when they're concentrating on kick boxing.

He laughs when he realises it's L. Should have guessed he'd be into all sorts of crazy ninja stuff as well as being the Greatest Detective Ever.

Matt tries for a loop - oh fuck yeah - then calls down. "Yo! Ryuuzaki! Looking good!"

L tends to react to the wildly unexpected by falling off his chair.

That's even easier when you're in the middle of a high kick on damp grass. At least he lands well.

"...Matt."

Matt speeds downwards at a slightly faster-than-wise speed, pulling himself short a few feet about ten feet above L (and almost unseating himself in the process, but he manages to hold on). His cheeks are flushed, his hair is in a wild disarry and he's breathing quickly.

"Hey," he grins. "You okay?"

"Fine."

Startled, and now a little damp, but perfectly fine.

"I take it you found the broom."

"Yeah. There's a few spares." Matt finds he can't keep still, letting the broom float in a lazy circle around L. "How did the kitten-bestowal go?"

"I keep making him cry."

He doesn't quite know what to do about it, either.

"I think he's happy, but it's also frightening, to see that he is so unhinged. I have only a limited capacity for care and understanding and I am worried that his needs will exceed it, and I will be responsible."

A little reluctantly, Matt floats closer to the ground; if nothing else, this doesn't seem like a conversation that can be had while hovering teen feet in the air.

"You can only do so much for him. And... I dunno, he's probably just not used to having someone looking out for him. D'you think he's together enough to understand that? That you're only human?"

"I am supposed to be more than." He even manages it, most of the time. "I was supposed to ask you about fighting, actually, and how well you can. I am teaching Near, and we were reflecting, and realized that neither of us knew."

He's staring mostly at the broom, a little dubiously.

"Well, yeah, but..." Matt shrugs, letting it drop. "I'm pretty good with a gun. Actual fighting, not so much."

"Alright. If you become worried, there is always time to learn."

L is a good shot when he has time, a bad shot when he's going fast, and hasn't ever carried a gun in his life, so it's all shooting range, so he has no idea how it would really turn out.

"What is it like? The flying?"

Turlough was in slightly warmer clothes than usual, sitting in the stands of the Quidditch field. One of the few pluses of his exile at that school was that the teachers knew he liked to draw and encouraged it.

Right now, he was drawing the pitch, mainly for the architectural structure. He didn't even try to draw the kid flying around.

Matt tries a couple more loops, then comes speeding over to skite over Tulough's head a couple of times. He's feeling positively gleeful, which doesn't happen often.

"Hey!" he calls down. "What you doing?"

A momentarily confused face is all the surprise Turlough betrayed at finding the kid above him. He lowered his pad flush to his knees so Matt could see.

"Working on the Quidditch pitch."

"You're an artist?"

He's been practicing hovering, and for a moment he considers trying to actually lie on the broom. But no, he'd look like a complete moron if he fell.

"I dabble. Don't have the desire to go professional. Not here anyway." Of course not, and stay on Earth? No, he'd rather go elsewhere.

"Not here? You mean Hogwarts, with all the moving pictures?" Matt had spent some time actually talking to a couple of the portraits on one of his late-night wanders. Such a weird place to be.

"I'm Matt, by the way."

"Turlough. No, I mean Earth. I don't like it here, I don't know why I end up coming back here so often."

Blink.

"You don't come from Earth?"

It shouldn't really be as surprising as it is.

He shook his head. "No. Got exiled here; political reasons." He went back to his drawing. "And you? An Earthling, I presume."

"An... Earthling, yeah." He laughs. "I never, EVER thought I'd say that seriously. Where are you from, then?"

"Trion. You probably haven't heard of it, Earth knowledge of astronomy is primitive." He frowned at a particularly difficult part of the commentator stand.

"Nope, never heard of it. Wasn't that into astronomy anyway. What's it like?"
