COMC: How to Sex Your Furby

It was the promised second half of Care of Magical Creatures, and it was being held in the same calendar year! In the same season, no less!

Normally, COMC would have been a boring lecture followed by a group activity. Today, though, the professor was unprepared. Unprepared, unmotivated, and uninterested. So instead, written on the chalkboard was an assignment:

Male Furbies
-Larger body size
-More pronounced curve of the beak
-Longer fur tuft on top of head

Female Furbies
-Smaller body
-Longer toes
-Wider hips

WHAT GENDER IS YOUR FURBY? DISCUSS.

Since he was technically supposed to be in the room while he was "teaching," Grant was sitting at a desk at the front of the room, reading a book. He'd even put it down if somebody asked him a question. And while Grant was normally a stickler for proper terminology, there was no way in hell he was going to tell his students to "sex your furby."

((COMC Rules: There are no partners or assigned groups. This is an open RP to all students, even people who aren't on the list or don't have furbies. If your character is furby-less, you can assume they pick up a loaner furby at the door. There is no right or wrong answer. If you need prof or TA attention, PLEASE put a note in the subject line.))

"Neither of them appreciated my... directness... upon their arrival. I am better at presenting facts than couching them in euphemism. It angered them."

"Yes, you can be a bit...blunt." More petting. "I'll admit I've been tempted myself. But I wouldn't do that, and for someone I know to have been hurt...it's unsettling."

That made Near chuckle. "I would not have been as lackadaisical about it, coming from you. Their grievances were not brought upon themselves by their own blindness, but by heroic actions in a greater cause." Namely, making sure your brat didn't get away with genocide and world conquest.

"Don't start Near. Rubbing it in my face that L was right is not enough reason to hit you, but push it and I'll want to. And you don't deserve it. You're no criminal."

"I'm not a criminal, no," Near said coolly. "How unusually perceptive for you to have noticed."

He was glaring and an eye was beginning to twitch. God damn it, Near, he made it far too easy TO hit him.

"No one taught you to curb your tongue."

"Only if I am incorrect, Yagami-san." Near's smile was poisonous. "Tell me, has your daughter shown any psychopathic tendencies? It is uncertain if such flaws are due to nature or nurture but either way, she should be watched."

Oh, now he's pissed.

"Don't ever say that about my daughter again."

And he backhanded Near. Near did have that coming. There are many things Soichiro Yagami could tolerate, but insulting his daughter (who suffered mentally and physically from this case!) was one thing he couldn't.

His smile never wavered, even though blood trickled out of the corner of his mouth where a tooth had cut his lip. Spinning, he kicked Yagami sharply in the left kneecap.

"Never forget what your family cost the world, Yagami-san. It was your son's doing that Matt and Mello died, among innumerable others."

"Yes, you're quite fond of reminding me," he said through clenched teeth, clutching his knee. "But tell me. What set Matt and Mello off that they would hit you? I don't you insulted their daughters."

"Matt was quite distraught when he heard that Mello had died. For his own part, Mello was not pleased with being told of his own death either. I know my friend has been less than kind to your family and doubtless you would not have mourned his passing, but the manner of his end quite balanced out the wrongs of his life."

"So you're friends now, huh? I was under the impression that you were rivals." That knee was going to kill him for a week, but Soichiro uprighted himself and limped closer to the table.

"The reason for our rivalry has passed." And other developments need not be gone into. "And he has the consolation of knowing that without his supreme sacrifice I could not have brought your son to justice. It is rather a potent salve to his pride."

"Well. Good for him." He growled as he leaned too much on the knee. Or because Near was pissing him off again. "One would think you like being hit, you seem to encourage it often." Okay, now he's just being mean.

"Honesty can be difficult to bear, Yagami-san. I was not raised to couch harsh truths in pretty deceits to make them more palatable. That would have been an insult to L's name."

Anger lead him to speak the next words.

"As would your son's survival have been."

"Fair enough," he said with a hardened face. Why couldn't Light have killed this bastard, too? That, of course, was never leaving his head. "You still deserved that."

"I am sure believing that will make your failings easier to bear. It is always simpler to lash out when upset. Mello is much the same way." He mock-bowed.

For some reason, that comment made Soichiro chuckle. "Really? I'd hate to imagine his reaction to that." The moment starting to pass, Soichiro stood up a bit straighter. "If we're going to fight, we should hold off till after class."

"Is that a challenge, Yagami-san?"

"Only if you care to make it so."

"I have no love of quarreling, physical or otherwise. I regret that you find my truthfulness troubling."

"Hm. Not the best use of energy." Soichiro sighed. "Never thought I'd get along better with Mello. At least we haven't traded blows."
