Application: Robin of Loxley (Robin of Sherwood)

Current Application:

1. What is your favorite cheese? Why is it your favorite?

Cheese was a luxury in those days of trial; I cannot remember the last time I tasted it. When I was a boy we kept a few goats, and my mother would make a soft cheese from their milk – that I remember quite well. It was a luxury then too, but one to which she was glad to treat my father and me, before the Sheriff’s men came. So that is my favorite, I think.

2. Who would you kill first, Barney or Carrottop?

If either is in league with the Sheriff or with Gisbourne he will find himself on the wrong side of my bow.

3. What time is it where you are?

Time does not matter in the Great Forest.

4. If you were Albus Dumbledore returned from the dead, which member of the Order of the Phoenix would you sexually harass? How would you harass them? If you are Albus Dumbledore, please answer as if you were Sirius Black.

I do not know of this Order, but if there is a red-haired woman with both beauty and fire, she should have my attention, of a certainty, though I force myself on no woman.

5. If you are pushing to be in:

A. Slytherin - please state the clever, witty name of the bar in which you bartend, in the dark.

I would call it the Silver Arrow, and I would serve the finest dark brews of the county.

B. Gryffindor – Debate whether Harry should ultimately end up married to Fred or George. Use examples from a variety of world mythologies to bolster your argument.

I am no judge of marriage; but love and freedom is all we fight for, is it not?

C. Ravenclaw – You guys are supposed to be smart. Explain why my desk is inundated with paperwork at all times, even though I’m constantly disposing of it.

Where I come from paperwork is but a trap of legal wrongs, a thing of this world meant to bind men to other men. All men should be free. Burn your paperwork.

D. Hufflepuff – Prove you are not useless.

Truly, I am here to learn so that I may continue to fight for freedom of all men. Herne has called another in my place – he has the love and loyalty of all whom I called friend or lover, and my place is no longer in that world. I met my fate at the hands of the Sheriff’s men, and was glad to give my life for Marian and Much. I rested for a while in the Great Forest; but now Herne grows old and there are many who no longer follow the old ways. He sends me here to learn of magic what I may, that in time I will become Herne the Hunter and call a Hooded Man anew.

6. Offer a bribe to the members of this community so that they will not squib you. Items used in bribery do not necessarily have to belong to the person offering the bribe.

I can teach what I know of woodcraft, swordplay, and archery, if any are interested.
That and my friendship are all I can offer.

She literally clasped her hands together. "Oh! I've always wondered... well, so many things! Where I'm from, you're an absolute legend."

Robin blushed furiously, spreading his hands wide. "Ask what you will, my lady, but I was not Herne's only Son. I may yet disappoint you."

"... oh, well, which one are you, then?" She crossed her arms, leaning in and interested.

"I was the first to answer Herne's call," said Robin, with touching pride. "Er - what stories have you heard?" he added, blushing slightly.

"... you're Robin of Loxley." Now she does take a step forward. "All yours, mostly. Nearly all, anyway."

Robin literally does not know what to say. "I am - I cannot -" He blushes deeply. "I thank you, my lady, for your kind interest. By what name may I call you, please?"

"Toshiko. Tosh, really, everyone calls me Tosh." She tucks her hair behind her ears. "So it's all true, then? You and Herne and the Sheriff and Marian, all of it?"

"I cannot speak to exactly what you have heard, but aye, the Sheriff and Herne and Little John and Gisbourne," he gives her a brief interrogative look to see if she recognizes those names too, "and -" there is a minute hesitation - "and Marian, yes. Those things are true. Perhaps we may compare stories at some time?"

Oh yes, she knew those names too. If her eyes could get any bigger, they'd be cartoonish and glittering. "Oh, really? I would love that. We could take a walk, I could show you the place while we do?"

"I should enjoy that very much, my lady Toshiko." He looked at her for a moment, his green eyes warm. "It is an unusual name, my lady. May I ask its origin?"

"Just Tosh, really." Now it was her turn for her cheeks to color slightly, and she glanced down and away. "It's Japanese, where my grandparents are from. Very far east of here, past, oh, goodness, three times as far from England to Italy."

"Shall you forgive me if I do not shorten such a lovely name, my lady Toshiko? Or would it cause you some disquiet?"

He smiled and shook his head. "I have never been out of England, so I have nothing to compare with such a distance. Unless it is time." Robin thought for a moment. "I have been at rest for 800 years, I am told. How far would I have walked each day to find where you are from?"

"No, it's all right. I just don't want to give myself airs I don't have,that's all." She ducked her head again.

"Well, six thousand miles or so... and there is the channel,and then the ocean... still, not so far for all that time." She smiles. "A quarter mile a day, for all the time you were sleeping, I think, with room for a few days to rest."

"Six thousand miles." Robin took a moment to absorb that, then nodded. It would have to be some distance, he thought. He had never seen anyone like Toshiko before.

He looked at her, smiling. "Six thousand miles and eight hundred years, and yet we managed to meet. I am glad we came all that way, my lady Toshiko."

"So am I." She returned his smile, almost shy, and peered at the ground. "Good sir Robin. Shall I... that is,what house would you like to be in?"

He shook his head. "No nobleman, I am but Robin, my lady Toshiko. And I put myself in your hands with confidence. Vote me where you think best, and there I shall go happily." The more Robin looked at her, the more he enjoyed looking, and something of his enjoyment crept into his expression as he smiled at her, though he wouldn't embarrass her for the world.

"Now, I'm no noblewoman and you call me lady," she points out. "Mmm,you wouldn't like Ravenclaw. Just anoraks and drunkards." Sigh, unfortunately. It'd be so amazing to have him in her house. "I think... Gryffindor. You're useful,but I think even more you're brave."

"One need not be a noblewoman to be a lady," Robin points out with a grin. "I thank you for your vote. How may I reach you, to arrange for our walk?"

"One need not be a nobleman to be a sir, for that matter. Not in this age,anyway." She smooths her shirt self-conciously. "They send messages by bird here --owls -- and there are plenty free for all to use. Just address it to Toshiko in Ravenclaw."

Robin chuckled. "Possibly not, but it is unseemly for an outlaw to be too noble. I look forward to our walk, my lady Toshiko." He reached for her hand, to kiss it, curious to know if she would let him.

And she did. She'd recovered from her earlier coloring and allowed it quite gracefully. "Good sir Outlaw, then," she says, with an impish little smile. "To remove all doubt."

She ducks her head and takes a step backwards. "I hope to hear from you soon, Robin."

He allowed his fingers to brush the inside of her wrist as he let her go, his eyes dark and green as he studied her. "You shall, my lady Toshiko. I promise."

She drew in a breath when his fingers touched -- nothing obvious, only someone really watching would see -- and took another step backwards before turning to walk away, walking with a slight sway, thinking she'd likely be watched.

Oh, she was.

Robin drew a deep breath. Mere moments into his Sorting and his focus was all shot to hell. He could almost hear Herne's disapproval. Jamming his fingers into his hair, he huffed out a breath. There were plenty of beautiful women at this school, it seemed, but this one... this one... no, he didn't dare finish that thought.

But maybe eight hundred years was long enough to be alone.
