"Obsessing over the past is a waste of time. You can't change it, so you might as well let it go and move forward." He shrugged. "Easier said than done of course." He wasn't always able to follow his own advice, especially on rainy nights.
He took another drag on his cigarette. "People change, that's what they're supposed to do. Do you really think she would have wanted you to die too? Or to stay frozen in time, just as you were?" His voice was calm, not accusing. His gaze sharpened, as he suddenly made a connection. "Is that it? Did he claim to have a message from her?"
He leaned over to stub out his cigarette (carefully not looking at anything other than the ashtray). Then he got up off the bed and went back over to the table to retrieve his glass. The ice had melted and it was mostly water now, but that was probably for the best. He grabbed the bottle and poured a little more, then turned and held the bottle up, silently asking if Gojyo wanted another shot.
