"But how will you know if I'm telling the truth or not?" asked Road, and then continued speaking without waiting for a reply. "Once upon a time there was a city where the same day kept on repeating itself over and over, always exactly the same, but no one inside the city realised. They were like actors playing out the same scene endlessly. A very old and wise Earl told me about it, so I went to find out what was causing it so that I could stop it.
"I went through the barrier that kept the Rewinding City seperate from the outside world, and everything was a month behind, just like I had been told. I wandered about the city, investigating, until the day ended. Only it didn't exactly end; it rewinded. All of the time was sucked away at nightfall, and the same day immediately started again.
"So I explored some more, hoping to find the cause, and this time I was lucky. I overheard a woman talking about how her clock was the cause of the rewinding time. It turns out that the clock was possessed by an evil substance called 'God's crystal' or 'Innocence', and that it wanted to synchronize with, and consequently enslave the woman, Miranda." At that point, Road's tone became sad, as though speaking Miranda's name caused her pain. It didn't, but Coraline didn't need to know that.
"I took Miranda back to my place with plans to free her from the Innocence, but I was attacked by a boy named Allen Walker, because he's possessed by Innocence, which didn't want me to free a potential comrade. Allen and I fought, and the Innocence synchronized with Miranda while we were distracted. She became an enemy and joined in the fight, and soon after I escaped without being able to free Miranda."
Road had definitely stretched the truth at a few points there, but she hadn't exactly lied either.
