"Not quite." Smiling indulgently, he lifts Mello's hand and kisses it. "No, I'm not sad. But right now you are very silly, and Matt is very silly, and you would probably have more fun if I was not being intrusively serious."

I blink and then smile. "But, if my Near is gone, then who will I hold? I can't hold Matt, L's got him and I don't want to hold L. If you go, I'd have to follow you so I could hold you." I nod solemnly. At this stage of intoxication, holding is very important. I lean over and whisper in Near's ear, "I used to have a very large Bear that I'd hold. Don't tell." And, then I giggle again.

"Too late," observes L, who's perfectly happy to just hold on to Matt. Whether they stay or go.

"You're convinced you won't partake, Near?" Teasing.

Matt obviously knows about the bear, even if Mello was old enough to vehemently (and a tad violently) deny his attachment to it by the time Matt arrived at Wammy's. He snickers.

"I've still got the pipe, if you want." Seriousface! "I mean, you missed out in Potions and everything."

Mear's starting to develop a deer-in-the-headlights look. "I don't, thank you. I don't feel deprived." And, really, the thought of being that silly doesn't appeal to him. "And Mello, really. You know how much I love you, do we need to be joined at the hip?"

I let my hands fall. "I'm sorry." I don't want anyone else mad at me, not right now. Not now. Later, I can deal with it.

"I was joking, Near," L reassures him, "why don't you tell us how your day has been?"

He smooths an affectionate hand down Matt's back, where the others won't notice, not overtly.

He raises his eyebrows at Mello's reaction (though it's hidden by the goggles still on his forehead).

"Near, chill. We're not going to tie you down and force you to smoke anything."

L's touch soothes him, though. He settles back and shuts his eyes, content to listen to whatever Near decides to tell them.

"It's all right, Mello. I'm not going to smoke any, but it's fine that you did. I don't want to get in the way of your fun."

I reach up tentatively and brush his cheek. "I said I wouldn't make you. But, I do like...I like holding you, when I can. And, if you want to go, I can hold Koopa instead, though you're better." The past couple of weeks have taught me a lot about him and myself. I know he won't leave me. I know I won't push him away. I smile. "I'm happy," I tell them all.

"That's nice," says L, letting his fingers wander up and down Matt's back, still.

"It seems to be going around."

"I'm happy too," Matt decides to inform them all (just in case they were in any doubt).

"Which means, like, either we're all about to burst into song or something really fucked-up is going to happen. Maybe zombies."

He thinks about this, and then starts humming the chorus to 'Wonderwall' under his breath. Because he'd rather sing than get eaten by zombies, kthnx.

"I'm glad he's not a serious rival," Near says, and gives Mello an affectionate hug.

To L, "Should we worry, or are we content that this is drugged paranoia?"

I relax again, letting my arms go loosely around Near before looking over at Matt. "Dude, you sing and I will shoot you."

"I think we aren't worried," L assures Near, "although I will protect you, Matt. Perhaps it is best not to sing though, I don't really think the zombies are coming any time soon, and even if they do, we're in a stone castle."

"Well, if I'm getting protected." He grins and stops humming. (Obviously. Even with a Wammy's education it is difficult to hum and talk at the same time.)

"Dude, Mello, you can't shoot me. My awesome boyfriend will fuck your shit up if you do."

And he promptly cracks up again.

Near smiles at that, because it's awfully cute. "Ah, but he's already suggested you not sing. Wouldn't it be fairer to him if you didn't get shot in the first place?"

"Matt, you and singing is like...C4 and a detonator, seriously." I giggle at that.

"There are other things you are much better at," L says, diplomatically.

"You're all just haters."

Matt takes refuge in L, curling up against him. He is also a hater, but one who will defend him from zombies and fuck Mello's shit up, so that's alright.

"Yes, I can see how isolated and unloved you are." Near lets himself relax against Mello.

It feels really good to have Near relaxing. I kiss his cheek quickly. "Matt, I've heard you sing, or rather, my ears bled at your attempt to sing. If a melody were water, you carry it by boiling it away."

"It's not that bad," defends L, holding him more securely. "That's hyperbole."

"Hah," Matt says.

The fact that L has never actually heard him sing is obviously irrelevant.

"I'm afraid you might be biased," Near remarks to L.
