With the knowledge that L is willing to pay for any computer equipment he might need (which is a relief - he hadn't been looking forward to attempting to get his hands on someone's credit card while shopping with the world's greatest detective), Matt had gone to Hogsmeade and used the last of his money to purchase a wand.

Now he needs to find out what to do with it.

So, he's heading for the library. What he understands of wizarding culture suggests there isn't going to be much on cybermagic, but Matt isn't against figuring out things on his own.

"... that looks really fucking weird," Matt tells the bartender, before realising it's probably perfectly normal for him.

"Uh. I mean, Hogwarts." And he steps into the now-empty fireplace.

L had the good sense to get well out of the way, and is in place to catch Matt, the computer, the kitten, or some combination of the three if he stumbles on his way out.

Because that takes balance.

And it's a good thing, too, because Matt does trip a little, and for a horrible sickening moment he thinks he's going to drop everything and he has no idea what to go for first.

Instead, he half-falls into L's shoulder and manages to right himself just in time.

"Whoa. Thanks."

A little shakily, he puts down the computer to check on the kitten.

"Are you alright?"

The kitten is a little alarmed, but apparently glad to be back in the warmth, and moving around plenty inside the cardboard.

(L is talking to Matt, not the cat, this time.)

"Yeah, I'm alright. I've never really had to handle animals before. The responsibility might be getting to me."

But he's not killed the kitten, which is good!

"But we made it."

He shakes his head, and picks up the computer again.

"I am not sure I like that kind of travel."

"It probably just takes a bit of getting used to."

Matt's feeling better now that they're back, though - back with computers. Oh, thank god.

"It looks only slightly more comfortable than the brooms I have seen people riding."

And that's saying something.

"The brooms look pretty cool," Matt says. "Imaging going that fast - it must be awesome."

"Imagine falling?"

It would be bad.

"No worse than crashing would be." Matt is a Reckless Driver. "And falling might be kind of fun - y'know, until you actually hit the ground."

"Only for the short sighted."

The kitten mews impatiently, and L picks up the other parcels so they can get her back to his room, to let her out.

Matt follows along with his own things, the computer and the kitten finally in a satisfactory state of equillibrium.

"I take it you're not going to give it a shot, then."

"If I did, I would fly very low to the ground."

He hasn't entirely written it off yet.

"Ah, where's the fun in that?"

He hadn't really thought about flying until now, but the more he does, the more eager he is to try.

Once he's got his computers sorted.

"Do we even have brooms to try with?"

L hasn't seen any available.

"No idea. I assume you can get some from somewhere, though... the house-elves, maybe."

What the hell did he do before he discovered house elves? Matt can't really remember.

"Unnerving as they are."

Weird creatures with big eyes.

"Yeah. Have you tasted their food, though?"

Which reminds him... "We should have picked up a McDonald's while we were out."

L makes a face.

"You consider their food edible? MacDonalds, I mean, the house elves are fine. Have they drastically improved, over the years?"

Matt laughs; he wouldn't have figured L for a food snob.

"Nah, not really. I like it, though. Gotta love some junk food every now and then."

By 'now and then', Matt means 'whenever I can be bothered leaving the house'. The food he eats the rest of the time is no less junkified; he just orders it in or puts it in the microwave himself.

"I do not like their sundaes."

For L to not like something sweet is unheard of.

"What about McFlurries?"

With Matt, it's the opposite way around - he doesn't like sweet things much, but he'll make an exception for McFlurries. Occasionally.

"I do not know if I have had one of those."

They might be alright. But privately, he doubts it.

"They might not have come out in... what was it, 1999?"

It occurs to Matt, yet again, how weird it must be to interact with people from your own future.
