With the knowledge that L is willing to pay for any computer equipment he might need (which is a relief - he hadn't been looking forward to attempting to get his hands on someone's credit card while shopping with the world's greatest detective), Matt had gone to Hogsmeade and used the last of his money to purchase a wand.

Now he needs to find out what to do with it.

So, he's heading for the library. What he understands of wizarding culture suggests there isn't going to be much on cybermagic, but Matt isn't against figuring out things on his own.

"Probably."

He itches to ask. It's completely against his nature to be content with only having bits and pieces of a story...

Matt doesn't notice - even a twenty-year-old-L is difficult to read, for all Matt's good at observing people.

"It sucks. But we're almost there," he says, as the pass the set of traffic lights again. "I can give you the directions to that wand place, if you like."

"Please. I should probably not wander about in a magical town."

That does not strike him as either wise, nor safe.

"It's tiny. I'll draw you a map or something. Are you gonna be learning how to do anything in particular, or...?"

"As much as I can. Soundproofing, protection and defense, primarily."

Especially with the soundproofing bit. In case Near's concentration fails him.

"... soundproofing would be good, yeah. You see what I mean now, right?"

He's not quite sure what kind of expression he ought to be wearing, so he resorts to his favourite trick, tilting his head to hide half of his face in his collar.

"Yes."

L sounds just flatly irritated by it.

"But Near promised to try to learn. The situation should improve."

"I fucking hope so." He's nowhere near as emphatic about this as he could be; just about everything he says on the matter could be written off as jealousy, so he feels like he has to try for as neutral as possible.

"Sex is very strange."

It apparently makes some people need to scream at the top of their lungs.

"We're better off without it. Games last longer, anyway."

And it'd be awesome if that was actually sincere.

L nods, in genuine agreement. It upsets Near a lot, after all.

This is the building with the fireplace they came through, and thankfully, someone is just coming out, so L can get his foot in the door and keep it open for Matt.

"Thanks..." Matt shoulders the door so that it's wide enough to let them through with their boxes and bags.

He's trying to figure out how they'll manage the powder with their arms so loaded with stuff when the bartender jumps up; evidently, he'll throw and they'll speak.

"You want to go first this time?"

"Alright. I just say 'Hogwarts,' and that should get me back?"

He wants to be clear on this one.

"I think so..." He glances at the bartender, who nods. "Yeah, looks like it. Pretty good system."

"Efficient."

He steps up to the floo. The bartender pitches the powder for him.

"Hogwarts."

Whoosh.

"... that looks really fucking weird," Matt tells the bartender, before realising it's probably perfectly normal for him.

"Uh. I mean, Hogwarts." And he steps into the now-empty fireplace.

L had the good sense to get well out of the way, and is in place to catch Matt, the computer, the kitten, or some combination of the three if he stumbles on his way out.

Because that takes balance.

And it's a good thing, too, because Matt does trip a little, and for a horrible sickening moment he thinks he's going to drop everything and he has no idea what to go for first.

Instead, he half-falls into L's shoulder and manages to right himself just in time.

"Whoa. Thanks."

A little shakily, he puts down the computer to check on the kitten.

"Are you alright?"

The kitten is a little alarmed, but apparently glad to be back in the warmth, and moving around plenty inside the cardboard.

(L is talking to Matt, not the cat, this time.)

"Yeah, I'm alright. I've never really had to handle animals before. The responsibility might be getting to me."

But he's not killed the kitten, which is good!

"But we made it."

He shakes his head, and picks up the computer again.

"I am not sure I like that kind of travel."

"It probably just takes a bit of getting used to."

Matt's feeling better now that they're back, though - back with computers. Oh, thank god.

"It looks only slightly more comfortable than the brooms I have seen people riding."

And that's saying something.

"The brooms look pretty cool," Matt says. "Imaging going that fast - it must be awesome."
