With the knowledge that L is willing to pay for any computer equipment he might need (which is a relief - he hadn't been looking forward to attempting to get his hands on someone's credit card while shopping with the world's greatest detective), Matt had gone to Hogsmeade and used the last of his money to purchase a wand.

Now he needs to find out what to do with it.

So, he's heading for the library. What he understands of wizarding culture suggests there isn't going to be much on cybermagic, but Matt isn't against figuring out things on his own.

Matt laughs at the man's disgruntled look, then tries to cover it with a cough. Hanging out with L is fun.

"Well, you've done pretty well today," he says. There's nothing for Mello, but Matt has no way of knowing whether that's on purpose or not. He wonders whether to bring it up; it's not his money, after all.

It hasn't occurred to L that he's buying things for people, really. He just meant to get the computer, and then he asked Near if he needed anything, and he did, and then he saw the kitten and went 'oh.'

"I suppose I have."

"You totally have." He shifts the boxes, trying to get a better grip on both. He can't really decide which it would be worse to drop, the kitten or the computer, so the obvious answer is to drop neither.

The kitten makes a nervous-sounding noise. God. Somehow, Matt decides, transporting a puppy would be easier.

"We aren't far now," he tells the cat, as though that'll help.

One more escalator ride; God, L hates those things.

Matt notices that L's addressing the kitten, and laughs. "Did you ever want a pet?"

He assumes L wouldn't have actually had one.

"I think I wanted a fish, when I was very young. To name Maurice."

That was important, though he can no longer remember why.

"And then a dragon. I read too much."

"Hell yeah," Matt grins. "Who wouldn't want a dragon? I wanted a dinosaur, but it's pretty much the same idea. And I remember someone who lived close to us had a dog - I always wanted one of those."

Maybe, once he gets paid...

"In a practical world, I would probably not want a dragon. I've been reading about them here."

Care of Magical Creatures textbook? Alarming.

"Holy shit." He'd known about unicorns, but... "Are you serious? How the hell have we managed to not notice dragons floating around all over the place?"

"They live in the wild. They are large."

And incredibly alarming sounding.

"I would not want to meet one."

"Yeah, no shit." The kitten not making it any easier to balance the little cardboard box, apparently trying to shift it's weight from side to side in a suicidal bid to escape. As soon as they get out of the mall Matt pauses, putting down the computer box to get a better grip.

"So what else actually exists? Dinosaurs? The Loch Ness Monster?" A little more balanced, Matt starts walking again. "Actually, that'd be pretty cool. Loch Ness can't be too far from where we're staying..."

"Phoenixes. Centaurs and merpeople, werewolves and vampires. And Matt, scientifically, we know that dinosaurs existed. Extinct and mythological are likely different things."

He hopes. He wouldn't like to meet a dinosaur, either.

"No way," Matt laughs. "And you know what I mean - it'd be pretty wild if they still existed. If you've got all these crazy things that shouldn't be real running about, why not things that we know once were?"

The idea of it is pretty cool, even if actually meeting a t-rex might not be on the top of Matt's to-do list.

"Well, we would probably be eaten, for one thing."

And L didn't even see Jurassic Park. He just knows how these things end.

"Be a pretty cool way to go, though." Matt hesitates, then is silent; it's a little too soon for him to feel able to make jokes about his own death. Not to mention that L doesn't want to know any details.

"We have to walk quickly so that the kitten does not get cold."

Because that'd be horrible.

"... but not so quickly that I drop it." Still, he does speed up. "It seems a bit shit that they expect you to carry it home in a cardboard box. Did he even put anything in there with it?"

Matt doesn't like cats, but that doesn't mean he likes the thought of a shivering kitten getting jolted around inside a box.

"I think they expect anyone who is investing in a pet to be able to drive."

Unfortunately, they're not exactly normal.

"I guess. Fuck, my car!" Matt groans. "I didn't even think about that... I bet they fucking destroyed it. Jesus."

He'd be tempted to ask Near about it, but Near doesn't even know what happened to his and Mello's bodies.

"I'm sorry."

Although he thinks the concern is a little strange. He's never been one for attachments to inanimate objects.

"It's just... gah. My car, my computers - it's just annoying, you know? I worked hard for that shit."

"I would have thought that more of your computers would arrive."

L is getting his books, some cd's with files on them that'll be useful, pages of research and old cases.

"Nope. Clothes, a lot of games, random bits and pieces... the most advanced thing that I've found so far is a second DS. Nothing I had with me in LA. Since they probably considered me a terrorist I'm going to assume it all got destroyed."

"Probably."

He itches to ask. It's completely against his nature to be content with only having bits and pieces of a story...

Matt doesn't notice - even a twenty-year-old-L is difficult to read, for all Matt's good at observing people.

"It sucks. But we're almost there," he says, as the pass the set of traffic lights again. "I can give you the directions to that wand place, if you like."
