Rooftops are Win

Stephanie Brown had a lot of reasons to be happy. She was alive, not-a-zombie, and apparently imbued with latent magical abilities. However, at this very moment, her happiness was primarily due to the fact that she was standing hundreds of feet above ground level, Spoiler costume on, with a new grappling hook in hand. Batkids were weird that way.

Steph a deep breath, and dived off of the edge the Owlery. She released her hook (admittedly waiting a few feet longer than would usually be safe, due to the lovely ‘no-kill’ spell in place), landed on top of a gargoyle, and sighed contently.

"Still got it."

"Planet? I don't think so, not exactly." Malingo wished he'd had a chance to learn more about how the Abarat and the Hereafter were related. "More like... another dimension? You can go back and forth under certain conditions, and it doesn't involve going into space."

"Oh, okay! I've been to a few dimensions myself, with mixed results. Does everyone on your dimension look like you?" Steph didn't mean it as an insult, and hoped it wasn't taken as one.

"No. We've got a lot of variety, in the Abarat," he replied. "To tell the truth, it's a little unnerving, how similar everyone looks, here."

"So it's not just a color/body-type difference, in your world?" Color Steph interested!

"No - we've got all sorts, and not all of them even breath air," he replied. "After all, the Abarat is an archipelago, so there's a lot of room for aquatic people, too. And even on land... well, let's say that I'm actually closer to, er, human-looking than most people."

"Wow. What's your society like? I'm assuming people don't go out and get 9-5 jobs."

"Nine to Five? Well, I suppose there's probably someone who's job involves going from Quaim Hah to Soma Plume..." he shrugged helplessly. "Somehow, I don't think we're quite on the same page, here."

"I guess not! What brings you all the way to this school? I'm guessing it was a bit of a culture shock."

Malingo shrugged. "I'm really not sure how I got here, let alone why," he said. "but yes, it was a, um, 'culture shock'."
