There was a long, awkward pause on Doug's part, one where his eyes made a quick, sudden transition from confused to understanding... to knitted to recognizing to explosively wide to terrified and paranoid, all in about three seconds. A few more seconds followed, silently, before he finally prompted, "Earth exploded?" in a voice that was about two octaves higher than his normal one.
