OOC: Poll on proportion of human to nonhuman or superhuman characters (from Methos-mun)

As per Methos-mun's question, here is the poll she devised!

For the purposes of this poll, the following gradations of humanity are used:

  • Human (no special traits outside of being a wizard)

  • Near Human (characters with special traits that may or may not lead to significantly longer life-spans and have to be acquired at some point after-birth. Vampires and werewolves fit into this category, as would any character who was "gifted" or "cursed" with a particular trait)

  • Near Immortal (characters whose innate traits mean they live for centuries (or millenia) on average, yet still be killed (or have a final death). Highlander-style Immortals fit in this group, and demi-gods.

  • Immortal (Gods, demons, Q from Star Trek. Anything that has existed forever or approximately as long and more or less can't be killed)

Understanding that the above definitions aren't hard and fast -- a lot of the characters here could easily be interpreted as falling between the gradations -- just go with what you think fits best in answering the following poll questions:

Should Jekyll/Hyde be counted as human or near-human? Technically, they do have a special trait acquired after birth.

[identity profile] 5000yearold.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
This one is hard XD You can go either way!

[identity profile] m-the-inspector.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Got it. *scuttles off to fill out poll*

[identity profile] 5000yearold.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Can you add an edit that says something to the matter of, "go with what you think works best" because a lot of these won't be neat. :-D

And thanks again!

[identity profile] 5000yearold.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'd probably go human? Though it's acquired after birth, it's more science/magic gone awry and he's not really preternatural in the same way that vamps or were-wolves are.

[identity profile] m-the-inspector.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
It does give him some abilities that other do not have (namely the ability to bypass a conscience and change his form almost at will), and I have seen him described as a monster. Ach, now the votes are split!

[identity profile] m-the-inspector.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I still need to answer that comment, don't I? *flees once more*

[identity profile] 5000yearold.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's so hard to decide! Go with what you think works best. XD

[identity profile] anthony-crowley.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Anybody got an opinion on the founders? What category are they in?

[identity profile] anthony-crowley.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't either... XD I guess I should hold off on answering this until we have some kind of consensus amongst us.

[identity profile] spiritoferos.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I marked Sal down as one of my three human chars. After all, they only have wizarding powers and can be killed like any other human.

[identity profile] anthony-crowley.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
But we don't know why they're still alive, do we?

[identity profile] spiritoferos.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Because we want them to be. XD Don't poke the fourth wall! Don't poke the -

...Damn, too late.

Authorial intent. Blame it on the GODS.

[identity profile] anthony-crowley.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
ok, ok, I made her human.

Sorry for liking things to make sense and stuff. ;)

[identity profile] spiritoferos.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
*dies* I just count them as human because really, they don't have any special powers or anything more than a normal wizard would. Them coming out of the Hat is like Tom coming from the book-horcrux; they were just in storage. The storage doesn't alter what they are, to my way of thinking.

[identity profile] anthony-crowley.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
*g* No, I understand and it makes sense. It's just that if they're memories or echoes or soul parts, I'm not sure that'd make them human or any of the other categories. I don't want to argue it, though, so human is fine.

[identity profile] spiritoferos.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
*deadage* There are too many people that don't go neatly into one thing or another.

[identity profile] 5000yearold.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'd call them human. They've got some kind of horcrux-y thing going on, but they haven't atually been alive and flesh for that almost 1,000 years.

[identity profile] sensiblesusan.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Fillerbunny, I guess, will go in "near-human", for a wide variety of reasons. Bene Gesserit training notwithstanding, I guess Irulan is straight-up human?

[identity profile] sensiblesusan.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Works for me. *goes to complete survey*

[identity profile] ppp-weasley.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
((Edited because... 'weant'? What the hell?))

I was stuck between putting this guy here between Near-Human and Near-Immortal. Eventually, due to his relative weakness, I went with NH. I hope that's ok.

[identity profile] conriocht.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
But what about the Sorting Hat or Rincewind's luggage?

[identity profile] 5000yearold.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
<.< Well, since it seems like the Founders are being considered human, for the sake of the survey they could be too.

[identity profile] nemofound.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
((I'm probably the only one here with this problem, but I have only one character, and there's no way to mark "Zero of my characters are human" because Nemo isn't, really, even if he can be chibi sometimes.))

[identity profile] harrylives.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I went ahead and put Mr Butlertron in as an Immortal. There was no check box for robot! (Besides, I don't think he can really die...)

[identity profile] hero-killer.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was wondering about Vic too. He's a cyborg.

[identity profile] silver-plumes.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
I stuck Bartimaeus as near-immortal. Can't really consider him immortal since he nearly gets killed with a soup dish at one stage.

[identity profile] luciferincarnat.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Near Immortal for the Robot Devil.

[identity profile] luciferincarnat.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Robots can be shut down, they should be near immortal.

[identity profile] ugly-old-hat.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the hat is immortal because it's a magic hat that's lived for 1,000 years, but who the heck knows! *g*
