"You're only just figuring it out?" He laughed bitterly, and knocked back another Sidecar like a longtime barfly. "Do you honestly think the other night would have happened the way it did if I wasn't? Silly me thought it might have mattered to you."

"Oh now who's being thick." He gave an incredulous shake of his head. "You really think I'd have made all that fuss if I didn't care? What, do you think I just open my mind to everyone I've even gone to bed with?"

"You accused me of it," he muttered, staring into his empty glass. "Because I have so much reason to welcome just anyone into my head. You matter, and if you didn't matter so much I wouldn't waste my time. How clear do I have to be? Because I'm used to you figuring things out on your own."

"Well consider it figured out." He threw back the last of his shots and groaned. "What are we doing?"

"Right now, getting drunk." He peered at the Doctor morosely. "Does this mean you'll be running again? Or hinting that you want some sort of ring?"

Neither. Right now I'd settle for just sitting here with you and letting the alcohol wear off.

It wasn't as promising as it could have been, but it wasn't flat-out rejection either. "The food here tends to the decadent," the Master warned him. "Make sure you specify something without intoxicants, if you want to sober up."

"Already made the mistake of drinking on an empty stomach", he pointed out with a smirk. The effects of the drink were beginning to kick it and he felt a little buzzed.

"Around me, no less." He laughed, not wanting to even count his own empty glasses. "Does that mean you want something to eat, or that you're going to get the most possible enjoyment out of being drunk? I can't remember the last time we got drunk together."

"You were beardier and about a head shorter than me if I recall."

"You do gloat about a few inches here and there. It doesn't impress me, you know. Just you being taller." Oh dear. Now he even sounded drunk.

"Well it should! I'm practically Statuesque!" Oh so does he..

"Only if the sculptor was Alexander Calder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Calder)" he said with a laugh that ended in a snort. But he said it fondly, and reached to stroke the Doctor's cheek, leaning on the table as he did so. "It doesn't matter, you know. Height. Specially not lying down."

"S'that got to do with anything? Means something when we're standing. I can reach all the highest cereal boxes."

"Cereal's no fun anymore. No more fun toys. And they keep calling them stupider and stupider things. Why do you want cereal?"

"Didn't say I wanted it. Said I could reach it."

"I'm pretty good at reaching what I want." He paused. "Eventually. Right?"

He smiled and reached across to pat his hand. Yes, you are. You're very good"

Oh, how was it that this time around the Doctor could be so devastating merely by being gentle? "Never gave up on you." Well, one way or another, but why spoil a tender moment with technicalities? "And here. That. The Popcorn Plaque. I watched it so closely. Just in case." He still checked it often, but nowhere near as obsessively.

"Sorry to have worried you. Don't plan on going anywhere soon though."

"Does that mean you'll be staying in our room?" He could count off the days if he wanted to, of course, surely he wasn't that drunk. It felt like a week. "Or do I need to come up with some desperate scheme?"

He snorted. "of course I'm statying in your room, don't be thick."

"If you're staying, it's our room. Just so I can say it. I like saying it. Our room."

He grinned and took another big gulp of his drink, although his mood was now celebratory.

"What sort of garish decor should I be resigning myself to?"
