"...wait, what?" He was using that word a lot just now, wasn't he? "I didn't... I mean, I figured it out, after being here for a while, from the way your successor greeted me, that I never..." Deep gulp from his drink. Slow breath. Careful words. "I knew that I wouldn't see you again, unless it was a place like this." And also that he might be really actually for-good-this-time dead, but he didn't like to think about that. "But why..." He frowned, and looked at the Doctor closely. "You did something, didn't you. You did something that was just... infuriating and totally you and regenerated just after all that... that, didn't you?"

He chuckled into the table and held up a finger without lifting his head. "You're good. It wasn't even five three minutes after you'd gone. Wilfred was tapped inside the box. You know. With the radiation. Knocked four times."

"Wait... was that the old man? He couldn't have even had a decade left to live! If you were human, you'd join PETA, wouldn't you." He was laughing softly, because the alternative was rage. "Only you. Only you would do that."

"I'd join PETA anyway." He laughs himself and sits up, downing the rest of the drink. "I never did thank you though....Ahh! That's strong,"

"I'd have to disillusion you about some of their practices, then." He laughed and shook his head. "It wasn't about thanks. It... you know how hard I fight, how I always have some plan to cheat death. But what would be the point if you weren't around to come back to?"

"I am though", you said so yourself. I've gone all tweedy and young with bowties." He smiled, but he knew what the Master meant.

"He's not unappealing, but..." The Master sighed. "I'm a ghost to him. And that is unappealing."

The Doctor frowned and gestured for a refill. "I should know you always find a way back..."

Oh, fuck it. He was well on his way to a solid state of intoxication and could blame his loosened tongue on that. "That's another thing you must not have learned yet, then. Some of the people here are dead."

"..........." The Doctor looked up sharply at the Master, fingers curling around his glass. "What?" So they could be.... He looked like he might be sick for a moment.

"I don't know. I don't. It makes being around your successor extremely uncomfortable. I try not to think about it." He smiled humorlessly. "Too much else to worry about, anyway."

Oh, and there goes another drink. Good thing La Fee Verte knows when to keep 'em coming. "Like you, for instance."

"me.... Because I'm meant to be gone you mean?"

"Idiot," he muttered under his breath. "Because I want you to be here. Because I practically haunted" maaaaybe not the best choice of words "the hall outside the Popcorn Room watching for you. Because when you were here - I know, you don't remember, and it wasn't for long - and just vanished again I must have looked truly wretched and felt worse, because I let one of your pets steer me here to get drunk. Because even your pet Freak knows that the way to get at me is you. Come on, I know you're clever."

He decided to ignore the remark about jack in favor of being completely and utterly gobsmacked.

"You're really serious about this."

"You're only just figuring it out?" He laughed bitterly, and knocked back another Sidecar like a longtime barfly. "Do you honestly think the other night would have happened the way it did if I wasn't? Silly me thought it might have mattered to you."

"Oh now who's being thick." He gave an incredulous shake of his head. "You really think I'd have made all that fuss if I didn't care? What, do you think I just open my mind to everyone I've even gone to bed with?"

"You accused me of it," he muttered, staring into his empty glass. "Because I have so much reason to welcome just anyone into my head. You matter, and if you didn't matter so much I wouldn't waste my time. How clear do I have to be? Because I'm used to you figuring things out on your own."

"Well consider it figured out." He threw back the last of his shots and groaned. "What are we doing?"

"Right now, getting drunk." He peered at the Doctor morosely. "Does this mean you'll be running again? Or hinting that you want some sort of ring?"

Neither. Right now I'd settle for just sitting here with you and letting the alcohol wear off.

It wasn't as promising as it could have been, but it wasn't flat-out rejection either. "The food here tends to the decadent," the Master warned him. "Make sure you specify something without intoxicants, if you want to sober up."

"Already made the mistake of drinking on an empty stomach", he pointed out with a smirk. The effects of the drink were beginning to kick it and he felt a little buzzed.

"Around me, no less." He laughed, not wanting to even count his own empty glasses. "Does that mean you want something to eat, or that you're going to get the most possible enjoyment out of being drunk? I can't remember the last time we got drunk together."
