Astronomy Office Hours!

Monday afternoon after the tumultuous events of the Halloween party seemed like an ideal time to hold office hours.

Miles had cleaned up his office with the assistance of Martin, his newly acquired house elf, so that it was in a state to receive company. A sign on the office door proclaimed office hours to be in session, and Miles sat behind his desk, a game of Battleship laid out in front of him. Martin had also provided non-magically enhanced cookies for Miles' guests. Miles had ensured their non-magical qualities by eating several himself, and he was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice and share any cookies with his guests.

Now, leg twitching, Miles stared at the door, hoping someone would come in and express some desire to learn something about astronomy. Or failing that, about cookies. Or Battleship. Really, he wasn't picky. He just wanted a chance to meet some of his potential students.

"Oh?" Miles cocked an eyebrow. "What planet is that?"

"Trion. I was trying to go back when I ended up here at Hogwarts. It probably would take a while anyway, the TARDIS tends to take us everywhere but where we want to go."

"Can't say as I've ever heard of that planet either," Miles said. "But I've had missions like that... They start out simple and then have a tendency to develop nasty complications as they go along... which, a lot of the time, tends to be my fault." He gave a what-can-you-do sort of shrug.

"It wouldn't be so bad if the Doctor wasn't so helpful. I swear, every place we go, there's a problem and the Doctor's gotta solve it."

"Sounds like a standup guy," Miles observed. "And I'm sure my crews have had similar complaints about me. But in my case it's probably because I'm way too nosy for my own good. At least, that's what my cousin Ivan would probably say."

"And if I didn't know better, I'd say you were another regeneration of the Doctor. Except you're not a past one, and a future one would have known me right off."

"That and I'm probably too short," Miles said dryly. "And I hate hospitals. Ugh. I would make a damned lousy doctor."

"Well, the Doctor was just what he went by. He's more of a meddler than an actual doctor. He's a Time Lord."

"Time Lord? That's really impressive, and definitely sounds like the sort of occupation that requires a lot of meddling."

"Ironically enough," he picked up a cookie, "they're supposed to have a policy of non-intervention. From what I know, that's why the Doctor got exiled once or twice. A wonder he ever got elected President."

"Sounds like this doctor was a man of many talents," Miles observed.

"He is," Turlough said with something like reverence. "I thought I found a future him here, but I'm not sure now."

"A future him?" Miles asked. "Does that mean there are more than one possibility for futures where you come from?"

"No, not quite like that. The Doctor, from what I know, has thirteen lives. The one I knew was the fifth one, and I've met the first three. This Doctor was not any of them."
