Halloween party!

For fondue that took a month to make, it had better be pretty damn good.

Where Tako had gotten the powdered bicorn horn was anyone's guess, or really, why he thought it was fondue in the first place. But it was a wizard recipe! The wizards did strange things!

On Halloween, the potion was finished. Schlepping the cauldron behind his bucket, Tako brought it into the Great Hall to share. Only one ingredient was missing, and this he got by sweeping some dirt up off the floor. He poured the fondue into cups and dumped in the hair.

The cups began to change colors. Some were bright and appealing, and had a delicious aroma. Others seemed to be a bit rotten. Can't win them all, Tako figured, but overall the recipe was a success.

Mmm, cheesy.

((The polyjuice potion contains hairs from Beowulf, Dieter, Snape, Tinky Winky, Amaranth, Dwight, Nate, Dawnstar, Luna, and Homsar. Well, maybe not HOMSAR hair, but do you really want to think about it? Permission given by all the muns.))

That earned Grant a glare from Vesper, who proceeded to sulk, and a sunny smile from Laura.

"I think I missed a step in that story," she said to Bond.

Bond hid his smile behind his hand, making a show of wiping some imaginary speck off his lips. "Ms. Lynd was the Treasury agent assigned to a project I was working on," he said. He couldn't tease her to hard, though, because all it would take to make this turn ugly again was for her to tell the truth.

"You were a very good accountant," he told Vesper. "Watching me and the government's money like a hawk."

"Of course, James. Somebody had to. And I'm famous for always getting back my own," she said eyeing both Bond and Grant. "Could anyone else use a drink? A real drink, I mean. We can send a house-elf to Ravenclaw for something safe, can't we?"

This was what personal house-elves were for. Grant called for his. "We're in the habit of drinking either scotch or beer," he said, "and he'll get us the good stuff for either. Anything else, though, and it'll just be whatever's easiest to reach from the bar. Is that okay?"

"Scotch sounds heavenly, thank you. Lots of scotch," Vesper added with a glance at James.

"Sounds fine to me," he said with a shrug. He could drink other things besides vodka. "Do lots of people pick up drinking problems here?" he asked.

"It's been known to happen," Laura said with a shrug. "Some people find all the random crazy a little hard to take. 'Course, for some of us, it's almost a relief given the places we came from."

Vesper nodded, understanding. "A little vacation from life's nastier realities? I could do with one of those."

[identity profile] dinosaurman.livejournal.com 2008-11-03 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
"It's a change of pace, at least," Grant said. "But eventually you'll need a vacation from this place. There are enough nasty realities here to keep you occupied."

Laura nodded, a little sadly. "It's all a matter of what you're used to, I guess."

Vesper looked to Bond, regret and world-weariness in her eyes.

The mood was getting far too dismal for Bond, who certainly didn't want to discuss the past, or spend the time contemplating the future. The house elf arrived and he took a tumbler of liquor.

"I hate to stick to a steady diet of moderation, but it seems to be key here," he said. "I've already had my run-in with the food."

Laura looked at Grant, and they laughed in unison. "He thinks he only gets one," she said to Grant in a low tone. To Bond and Vesper she said, "The trick, as we were just discussing, is to stick to food and drink you've authenticated. Preferably stuff you brought yourself."

An eyebrow went up. "Are students required to cook for themselves? I thought the Great Hall was the only place to get a regular meal, and I didn't see anything like a kitchen in Gryffindor." Not that he couldn't cook, but food was always better when it was made by somebody else.

[identity profile] wh0-kill3d-m3.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
"No, we're not. The food we get in the Great Hall for everybody's consumption at mealtimes you can pretty much always trust. It's random foods left out anonymously, or even food at parties like this, you need to watch out for. If they don't start out pranked, they may end up that way."

Vesper nodded. "Like the wizarding version of spiking the punch? I met a boy at my Sorting who seems to make a living off that kind of thing."

Grant nodded. "I'm not sure if it's intentionally malicious, but it's something to watch out for. It certainly makes stress eating a dangerous pastime. If you really want to be sure, though, there's Hogsmeade. And never, ever eat food the Hat gives you."

Not his hat. His hat could be trusted.
