Kusuriyuri seldom gave away any trace of excitement. He was calm, collected, his expression a near impenetrable mask of calm. Unless you look closer. Then you can see he has a cutting wit and an active sense of humor.

He also loves kittens and plants.

Today was a very good day for gardening. Ryuzaki, L, had said he would join later. Kusuriyuri was very privately of the opinion that L did not wish to clear the land before the plants could be put in. But, that didn't matter. He enjoyed the feel of the earth under his fingers, the metal of the tools, the wood of the plants, the water that nourished them and the fire of the sun that helped them grow. Very seldom did one get to actively work with all five elements.

And kittens.

A said he planned on bringing the kittens. Kusuriyuri was rather amused at the idea and looking forward to it.

The sun was just barely starting to pink the sky when he tapped on A's door five times.

"Your friends in the flower shop would probably be glad to help," L observes. "Even if Jonathan would be obliged to carry things."

"I don't have any money to buy my own plants with," A says, embarrassed. "I don't think they like me that much."

Kusuriyuri continues working. "When one is deshi, he is the responsibility of his sensei. It is done that the deshi's expenses are the sensei's and the deshi does work for the sensei. It is how skills are learned, after all."

"Besides, if we are all allowed the pleasure of the garden you will tend, the least we can do is make it possible for you to create it, to begin with. If you need anything..."

L is there for him. (And L spontaneously has building created- he can afford a few roses.)

"And if you are to enjoy it, it must have things you will like," A says triumphantly. "So you must tell me more plants you would like to see growing."

Kusuriyuri chuckles at A's vehemence. Seeing a rather large worm, he picks it up and tosses it in front of Shrodinger. He figures there's an even chance that the worm will get away and become Schrodinger's toy.

"Morning glories and peas are enough for me, for now. And the rose is a lovely colour."

L's satisfied.

"Maybe the next rosebush should be solid red-pink. It can be chosen just for the color, since the others are already picked for their strong scent." A's smile shows that his mind is made up on the subject. "And perhaps more sweet things to eat?"

"Currant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackcurrant) are sweet." He knows that the sweets are more for L's benefit than A's, but if A is happy, that is what matters. He is surprised to see that they were almost done with clearing.

"And other berries. Have you tried blackberries, A?"

They're a little brambly, but tasty.

"Only rarely. They are very good, but you know," he says in a scandalized near-whisper, "They aren't really black. They're dark purple."

In a very serious tone, which is a sure sign of teasing, Kusuriyuri replies, "Perhaps we shall call them purple berries."

"I don't mind either way, as long as they become pie."

Pie with custard. L has his priorities straight.

"Red-pink roses, currants, and berries for pie." A turns to Kusuriyuri. "And you must say what else you want as well."

Kusuriyuri stopped and looked around, taking in the kittens, both napping together, curled together like a yin-yang. He looked at A, dirty but obviously happy, and L, working hard at something he wasn't used to. He looked up at the sky adn down at the ground. The only thing he could think of that could possibly be missing was, "A lantern, perhaps?"

"Light, for night times. That might be wise."

Tripping on the rocks or stepping on the violets might be unfortunate.

"One lantern, or more?"

A's even more excited at the prospect of making the garden what L and Kusuriyuri will like as well as the things he's drawn to.

Again, Kusuriyuri looks around the garden. "Five or ten, which fits better?" One for each element, at least. "It will be easier to know after plants are in, I think."

"Depends on the quality of the light, the radius of the glow they cast." L starts mentally calculating the area of the patch, and how best to optimise light sources.

"Maybe... each lantern could be by a rosebush?" And even if the rest of the roses will be chosen for appearance, A will be making scent a priority as well.

"That would be good," Kusuriyuri agrees easily.

He finishes the patch of land he's working on and begins running his fingers through the ground to create rows.

L sets the shovel aside, and turns to observe the progress so far.

"Let me read the rest of the packets, in case we didn't notice other instructions." If morning glories need to soak and be planted, other things might too?

A hands L the packets, then starts on one of the other important tasks; restoring the shrunken violets, rosebushes, and pear tree to their normal sizes.

Kusuriyuri's eyes widen a little when the plants expand, though he expected it. Useful, this magic. "Maybe the tree next? Then the smaller."

L scans the plant packages, and finds nothing important.

"I think we're alright. Now, what should we do with this?"
