So, Matt and L...ouch, the thought alone hurts. But, Matt seems happy with L...or maybe I'm reading way too much into what I saw in the bar. Between finding out Near is indeed ticklish and practicing, though, I haven't had a chance to really find him and ask him. And, asking in the bar would have been...well, even I'm not that direct.

And, since I still want to be able to talk to him, I'm not sending him an owl.

So, I've been tracking him down. I start at the library, then the Great Hall, then his room. Why I didn't try here first, I don't know. It would have saved me time. I don't hear sounds of gaming as I knock, but there are some sounds behind the door.

He hesitates, but it's only for show and they both know it. When has Matt ever been able to say no to Mello?

"I'm there. Do you have something in mind?"

I think for a moment. "Something interesting enough to catch their attention, but benign. Detention, while entertaining, is not something I'd like to repeat." I stare out the windows high under the ceiling. "Maybe start with anonymous little notes left all over the castle...things disappearing randomly... If we take things from the right people, they'll go to one of them anyways because they're detectives." I frown, "It's minor, but...what do you think?"

"What sort of notes?"

Matt's pulling out a cigarette to go with his 'meal'.

I think for a moment. "They have to look like they mean something, like there are clues hidden in them." I think for a moment. What kind of clues would drive them both to figure out what's going on? "Obscure references to cases that they both would get, but would look like nonsense to others. But, also enough 'white noise' to hide those references or it'll be too easy." I look around again. "And, we'd have to make ourselves look targeted, too."

Matt snickers.

"Okay. I suck at lying, though, so if we target ourselves I probably won't talk about it much. You know more about the cases than I do, too..."

Yes, Matt's taking the backseat on this. That's just what he's used to.

I frown a little. "If you talk less, then it'll look suspicious." I chew on my lip a minute. "This will take careful planning, especially since we're going up against L and Near and don't want them to find out we're the ones behind it." I steal a couple more of his fries. "I'm gonna have to think about it." Anyone else and it would be easy.

"I won't suddenly shut up the minute someone brings it up," Matt says. "I mean, I'm not going to bring it up myself. But let me know when you've got something figured out."

I nod abstractedly, my mind not on what was going on around me. I reach for my pockets. No chocolate. "Damn it," I grumble.

"Didn't you come down here for chocolate in the first place?"

Matt sounds amused.

I pull a sour face and point to the cup in front of me. "That is not chocolate. That is sugar dressed up to pretend it's chocolate."

"Yeah, but you could ask for a couple of bars."

I frown. "They only have sweet chocolate here. They don't know what real chocolate is." I'm not whining. "Though, Mr. Wednesday had some really good drinking chocolate. From Central America, some xocolatl, bitter water, it translates to." I sigh. "I'm gonna have to go back to my room to get any decent chocolate."

"Wednesday... the Runes guy?"

Matt doesn't really like chocolate of any kind, but he knows a lot about the different types simply through osmosis.

"You want me to come up with you?"

"Yeah, the runes teacher." I shrug. "I talk to him sometimes. He helps me clear out my head, like an old wise guy, y'know." I stand, leaving the mug on the table. "Yeah, come up. I can bounce ideas off you."

"Wise old guy," Matt grins. "Nah, he seems cool. I asked him about Runes before I started my computer thing."

He stands, considers stubbing out the cigarette, then decides against it. Nicotine is a wonderful thing.

"Lead the way!"

I roll my eyes at Matt. "What if we challenge them to map this place? Not directly, but y'know? Think they could pass it up?" It's probably a stupid idea, but it might be amusing.

"It's worth a try, definitely. A map would be useful." He thinks. "It'd probably need to be magical, too, what with the way things shift around here..."

I lead us through the Ravenclaw common room, looking around first before I ask, "But, how do we couch it so they both try and don't think we're the ones who set it up?"

"Make it look stupid? Stupider than we are, at least. A direct challenge would probably work, except we're the only ones who really know who they are. No-one around here would challenge them."

I grin. "Dude, you are a genius, for all you try to hide it." I knock once on the door, letting Near know it's me if he's in the room before opening the door. He's not there, though. I grab a chocolate bar out of the top drawer and sit on the bed.

Matt shrugs. "Nah. I've just got more common sense than you guys." He wanders in after Mello, leaning against the wall across from him.

"... wow, Near really went to town with that, huh?" he says, nodding to the lego city that takes up a corner of the room.

I glance over at the lego buildings. "Yeah. They help him think. Can't bitch, he gets me good chocolate and it's on his side of the room." For all I try to sound bitchy about it, I don't think that comes out in my voice.

I turn back to Matt. "Make it seem like one of the dippy newbs came up with it? Or those otaku girls?" Here, the bitterness fills my voice.

Matt ducks his head slightly at the fondness in Mello's tone.

He can deal.

"Eh. Best not to be too specific, probably... otaku girls? You mean Konata?" He blinks. He can't imagine anything she could have done to inspire that sort of bitterness. "... did she beat you at Soul Calibur?"

"No," I twist the word out. "She took...pictures," the word comes out as if it is acid.

"Pictures?" Matt starts, confused. And then he remembers the conversation at the bar.

"Konata did that?"
