Since coming here, Soichiro had looked up a bit on the subjects taught here, and what interested him was the Defense against Dark Arts. In his eyes, for a police officer in a wizarding world, that seemed like a subject that would be of great use.

THere had been no DADA classes, and seeing as he had not much better to do, Soichiro went to the library reading a book on hexes, disarming spells, the like.

Research, the bane and center of our lives. I think, if I finish all the books on history and sociology (or what the wizarding world passes off as sociology. I still want to find books by other cultures mentioned and the house elves are less than helpful), then I'll be in a better position to move to the next step.

And, what do you know? Good old Yagami, in the books.

A glare and eyebrow raise at Mello. "What good will that do? No, I'll let you and Near have your victory, this is just to satisfy my curiosity."

Because I can, I sit across from him. "So, you'll let me die, then?"

"It helped Near prove that Light was Kira, didn't it? Then your death wasn't in vain. Besides, even I know that it could be dangerous to change history."

"Hmm, yes, paradox and such." I wave my hand. "So, why'd you hit Near?" I ask casually, not at all like I want to, with his shirt in my hands and my face in his. I even pull over a book and start flipping through its pages. "Get a thrill off of it, or something?"

Soichiro looked slightly scandalized. "I did not get a thrill off of it. He implied that my daughter was just as psychopathic as Light. She isn't." Another glare at Mello. "Mostly your fault."

I go still, moving just enough to look up at him. "My fault?" I ask.

"She never really recovered from her kidnapping."

I feel my lips twisting. "So, Near was correct. As psychopathic, just in a different way."

His eye began twitching. "At least hers is relatively harmless. All she did was stare at nothing, occasionally go through the motions of life. Not Kira-like at all."

"Oh, yes, of course. Perfectly harmless," I agree airily.

He was still twitching, but he was trying to restrain himself. He was lucky last time but if he's caught fighting, there would be trouble.

And if Near managed to make him limp, he doesn't want to know what Mello can do.

He ignored Mello in favor of thumbing through his book.

"So, I do wonder, since a lot of mental illness does have a genetic component and both your children were mentally ill, which side of the family did they get it from, Yagami?"

Matt arrives a little after the fight with Mello. He has his new wand, but - as resistant as he is to get back into the typical Wammy's mindset - he should probably find out about some of the theory first.

He blinks when he sees Soichiro.

"Uh... are you okay?"

Soichiro had recovered enough to get back on his chair, but yeah. Hurts to walk.

"Mello," he said in response to Matt's question.

"Ah." Matt stands a little awkwardly in front of Soichiro's table. "Should I ask?"

"It came down to names. Or rather, a name Mello didn't want to be known by. My fault, though, I provoked him by calling him by that." He winced. "But he was also mad about the fight Near and I got into in class."

"... yeah, names are sort of a touchy subject." He guesses that Soichiro has gathered this by now. "You saw his name before you died, right? And, heh, I kinda heard about the fight - what happened?"

"I can still see his name. That ability stayed." Soichiro reached for his book. "Near implied that my daughter was as crazed as my son. I lost my temper and hit him. He kicked me in my knee. And now Mello got me in my other." Ah, there's the page he was reading. Next time, he's bringing his wand and a Silencing charm to put on Mello.

"Wait, shit, you can see my name?" Not that he'd know how to pronounce it - he remembered, from when he was very small, getting irritated that so many people read it wrongly.

This takes precedence over hearing about how his friends like beating up the elderly.

He nodded and began reading up on that Silencing spell. "I assumed you had a middle name and preferred to go by it."

"Just..." Matt ran a hand through his hair. "I know you've probably already heard this from the others, but - don't use it, please? Even Mello doesn't know my real name."

Soichiro nodded. "All right, then. I won't. Frankly, I'm afraid to try to pronounce it." He flipped to the index. Now that he thought about it, something to freeze Mello in his tracks would be better.

"That aside, how have you been?"

"Heh. Not how you would expect, anyway." Somewhat reassured, he slides into a seat across from Soichiro. "Not bad... I've been hanging out with Ryuuzaki quite a lot, which is weird. And I've got a computer now. Finally." He squints at the book. "What're you looking up?"

"It is weird. He doesn't even know me and I saw him die. That...should be impossible." He held up the cover. Imagine some smart sounding title on it. "A book on defense against Dark Arts. Pretty interesting. Shame I didn't remember my wand, I could have practiced." He did not add 'on Mello', tempting though it was.
