"Did never a pleasant end require diligent toil to be reached?" Lezard tilted his head. "This is not to say that the work itself cannot be greatly pleasurable."

In fact, the answer suggested to him mainly that the gentleman either did not wish to discuss his purpose for being here, or did not know said purpose himself. The former was always understandable (though a true evil overlord would suffer an inexplicable compulsion to unburden himself of his plans in dramatic monologue from time to time, this compulsion was erratic in Lezard's experience, and greatly dependent upon the proximity of a hero[ine]), the latter hardly uncommon (though amusing to Lezard if it were the case, and in another mood he might have pressed the point in the hope of such amusement).

In his present mood, pressing for details was just too dull to bother doing. Though there was one thing he would like to know:

"Have you yet experienced enjoyment in these halls?"

Which was Lezard-ese for are you having fun yet?
