Sorting out memories

He stared at the Pensieve, trying to control his breathing and shaking. What he saw was this:

The first major difference happened when the other's Light's girlfriend Shiori (his Light didn't even know a Shiori) was killed by Naomi Misora before she turned the gun on herself. In his time, Misora simply disappeared and L assumed it to be the work of Kira.

The next difference was Mogi was the one that went to the TV studio, and subsequently died, instead of Ukita, and poor Sayu had to witness that, too.

Takada (who he remembers as someone who once dated Light) had been a different person, and took the place of Higuchi.

And here were the important differences.

Ryuuzaki had kept the cameras in Misa's room, and was able to provide conclusive evidence that she was the second Kira. Watari then swapped the Death Note for a fake one, and planted information to keep Misa thinking that she was killing criminals.

L suspected that she (or Light, who Ryuuzaki suspected as Kira) would use Rem to kill him....so he circumvented that by writing his own name in the Death Note, 23 days after the day he wrote in it. He was doomed the minute he wrote his name, but Rem could not kill him.

She still got Watari, but L faked his death, which Light admitted to engineering.

The next part sickened Soichiro, and he could feel the other's anguish even with the memories in the Pensieve.

Light had written his name in the fake Death Note, in order to get Takada's Death Note back.

With that, he had the knowledge that his son tried to kill him (in that world anyway) and conclusive evidence that Light was Kira.

Light and Misa were both placed under arrest, with L detailing to Light all that happened. He tried to use Ryuk to kill them all, but Ryuk decided to kill Light instead-just like Near had said.

The official news was that there was none. Kira, to the public's eye, simply disappeared, Light had died fighting Kira, Misa lost her memories of the Death Note, and L died in peace, which was where the memories cut off.



So. That's how it was.

Soichiro sighed. If that Light had tried to kill that him...well, it didn't look good for his Light, now did it?

The other him had no memory of ever hearing about or seeing Near or Mello, so they probably were alive in the other's world, but without knowing them, he had no way to be sure.

One thing that did reassure him was a sane, if mourning Sayu. That gave him a bit of hope for his Sayu, even if that one didn't get kidnapped by Mello.

He fingered the cat treats he had picked up for A's cats, as he pulled out parchment and pen:



Ryuuzaki,

I came across an alternate version of events regarding the Kira case. (I'll explain in more detail in person.) I managed to get the memories of that inside a Pensieve. If you're interested, I can bring it for you to see, if you like.

Also, I heard that A was with you. I have some treats for his cats, if he's interested.

He ducks away to find A and his entourage of fluffballs.

It hadn't been hard to get A out of his room. He'd pulled the shapeless blue dress on over his clothes, tucked Schrodinger and Einstein into the large pockets, and followed L gamely downstairs.

He did like Soichiro Yagami, after all.

He smiled a bit at A wearing that dress again. Whatever works, I suppose.

"Hi, A. I brought something for your kitties," he said, holding up the bag.

L goes to prepare himself more coffee, while the gift and thanks are exchanged. It is best for A to handle small social situations like this on his own.

"Oh... oh thank you!" A grinned happily as he took the bag, and yelped a little as Schrodinger leaped onto his arm, scrambling towards the bag.

"Behave, Schrodinger. You should say thank you." Reaching into the bag, he smiled again at the package of cat treats, apparently charmed to wriggle. "For your bad manners, Einstein will get one first."

He smiled. "Well you're welcome." He watched as A struggled to keep Schrodinger away long enough to give Einstein a treat. He set down his coffee and plucked Schrodinger away, to make it easier.

"They're getting better behaved," L comments. Mostly. Ish.

"Schrodinger is very eager," A says, excusing her somewhat while Einstein gleefully nibbles a squirming treat from the palm of his hand. "She is still very young."

"Animals aren't that known for patience anyway." He held the squirming Schrodinger, petting her. "Wait your turn, Schrodinger."

"They have no real need of it, I suppose."

It might be nice, being a cat.

"Einstein is better at waiting." He scratches the little black kitten behind his ears, then holds the container of treats out to Soichiro. "Would you like to give her a treat?"

"All right," he plucked one from the container. "Here you go, you little scamp."

Schrodinger pounced on Soichiro's hand, eager to get the treat.

L nods his approval.

"Scamp is a fine word for her."

"Perhaps she will be sleek and elegant when she grows up." That was how his reading had generally referred to cats. "She is rather silly now."

"Sleek, elegant, and thinks the world should bow down to her." He's familiar enough with cats to know about their holier-than-thou attitude.

"And there is nothing wrong with that." She is lovely.

"She likes to be bowed down to now, but only so she can gnaw on your fingers or suck your hair." It's said with obvious love. "She has no manners."

"Evidently." He could see small welts where Schrodinger scratched him while pouncing. He slid his hand from under her so he could pet her.

True to form, she tried to gnaw on his finger.

"Tap her nose if she bites too hard," L suggests.

As though he can stand up to her.

"Let me know if I should take her," A volunteers softly. "I don't want her to make you cross."

He shrugged A's offer off. "There are far worse things than being scratched up by a cat." The proof is in his pocket.

"That is very true." L doesn't want to go down this conversational road, though.

"Did your household keep any pets?"

Not wanting to interrupt, A busied himself scratching behind Einstein's ears.
