For Ryder, the past wasn't just another country, it was another planet--if he'd had a childhood, he didn't remember it. It very likely had to do with what he was, and what he did, but again, he couldn't be sure. Nash had made him wonder, but not overly much--as with Arya's questions, he wasn't a creature given to introspection.
