He managed to throw up both hands and stop the cannon burst halfway between them - hey, despite popular belief, he was not indestructible, and something like that was going to have him out of commission for a WHILE - but it didn't stop the explosion from detonating, flames licking at his arms and sending him sprawling backwards into the nearest wall and OW. He had to have at least cracked a few ribs, never mind the damage from the fire.
