Satisfied that everyone knew about the tryouts, Adam headed down to the Quidditch pitch at 5:30 to get everything set up. It was a warm, clear evening - perfect flying weather. Upon arriving, he concentrated until a chest containing all the necessary equipment appeared. Next to the chest was a stack of better than standard issue brooms. Summoning his own broom from wherever it was that he kept it, Adam hopped on and got some flying in before the people trying out for the Beater positions arrived.

In return, he nipped her ear as he leaped from her shoulder and ran away, bleeking with laughter. He'd read about this Quidditch thing and even seen entire matches played in the books, and he thought he could make an exemplary Seeker.
When he got there, he was alone, but for a young man riding a broom well overhead. His was an interesting mind-glow--much bigger than one would expect even from a human. Very intriguing, Nimitz thought. He sat down an decided to watch for a little while, at least until the young man noticed him.

Date: 2006-06-13 04:39 am (UTC)It was easily 500 pages, but he had some confidence that he understood at least a little of the game. At least, as a beater, he'd be hitting objects with other objects. On a broom, of course, which would make a slapshot more challenging, but if he was comfortable doing so on slick metal runners on frozen water, he could teach himself to excel at doing it on the fly. Literally, on the fly. Shrugging, he tucked the book into a niche of the wooden framework of the stands and delicately folded up his reading glasses to tuck into his front pocket, approaching the confident-looking young man directing the flying antics of...
...the six-legged cat and the blue woman. Oh boy.
"Hi there. You Adam? MacGyver, reporting for practice."

Date: 2006-06-13 04:54 am (UTC)"Well then. Physics be damned, I suppose. Think motorcycle, not broom." A little bashful, he swung his leg over the broom and gingerly sat down.
"So how exactly does this work, steering-wise?"

He jogged over to the small crowd around Adam. "Alright, man? How do we start this?"

'Why yes Lizzy it is. You have something in your teeth.'
'Oh... look at that man he's flying.'
Elizabeth tried to fly, but fell flat on her face. She got up and skipped the rest of the way.
'Weeeeeee'

Date: 2006-06-14 02:50 am (UTC)Still the school broom wasn't too bad at all, it wasn't his antique Silver Arrow, and his broom was probably more than antique now twenty years later than his time. But it wasn't bad. It was just a bit sticky, so he maneuvered from up high, out of the way, and trying to see if he really did want the Seeker spot if being Chaser didn't work out.
One arm cupped to his body as if holding the ball, James did a twisting shoot towards the goalposts; his broom spinning in a tight circle as it pushed forward. He loved that manuever for keeping the Quaffle with him when other Chasers were closing in. It also helped avoid a Beater to the head.

Date: 2006-06-14 04:28 am (UTC)"What happened to the position of Flying Instructor and Quidditch Coach/Referee? There's only so much you can learn on your own if you didn't grow up with a broom." Nothing against the Muggle-born. But he imagined it was like 'Lectricity and other things. Some things you just had to be born into the right environment for. Like language too. An instructor would even all that out.

Date: 2006-06-14 06:57 pm (UTC)"I dunno how much you four know about bein' a Beater, so I'll give you all the basics." He pulled out a short wooden club. "This is a Beater's bat. You hafta use this to hit these." He pointed to the heavy iron balls rattling around in their chains. "Those are Bludgers. Two of them are gonna rocket around tryin' to hit people durin' the game. Your job is to knock them away from our players towards the other team. So you're partly defense and partly distraction."
Handing a bat to each of them, Adam continued. "So what we're gonna do first is real simple. I'm gonna pair you up and all you hafta do is try to knock the Bludger back and forth. Try not to let it hit you 'cause it'll hurt. So MacGyver and Aayla, you two go up to the east end of the pitch and Elizabeth and Kon can take the west. I'll be watchin'. Off you go."
When they were all in the air and in place, he released the two Bludgers and jumped on his broom to observe.

'Take that you dirty pirate! No dirty pirate will hurt me!!!' And she hit the bludger across the pitch; which she totally didn't even mean to do.

Date: 2006-06-17 07:11 am (UTC)"MacGyver, Elizabeth, you two can go. Thanks for comin' by. I'll let you know about the positions in a couple of days. You both did great and this is gonna be a hard decision. Kon and Aayla, you two can stick around for more tryouts. Kon, you'll be up first for Chaser tryouts and Aayla, you can take a break before we get to Seeker tryouts. Now we just need Charlie and James."
He called to them silently but in a way they could hear flying high above the pitch and when they landed, he handed James the Quaffle.
"Okay, all I want to see you guys do is hover in a circle and toss the ball around. If it goes high or wide, try for it. If you miss it, dive for it. If it hits the ground, don't worry about it, just pick it up and keep goin'. It doesn't mean you won't get the position. All right? Off you go."
