He crept down the hallway toward the Hufflepuff commons slowly, Goth Girl clothing in tow. He whispered the password and snuck in, looking for Nico. Fortunately, she wasn't there. He might just get out of there without a scolding. Really, she had nothing to yell about, if you asked him. The clothes weren't stretched and he had washed them, but...women. You sneak into their common rooms, steal their clothes and wear them to a costume party and all they can think about is telling you off.

He quite skillfully arranged the clothing in a very natural fashion on the ground and turned to sneak back out. No harm, no foul. And other sayings in which he doesn't get yelled at.

Poor Chase, fate was not on his side. Nico had been out for awhile, just walking around the school and trying to collect her thoughts. Talking to Karolina had helped a lot but it opened up new questions in her mind. One of these days her life would go back to being simple and not overcomplicated, but not any time soon.

Just as Chase was sneaking out of the Common room, Nico was walking into it. A brow was arched when she came face to face with Chase. Gert wasn't in this house, hrn, the last time Chase had snuck in here...

"I hate to break it to you Chase, but the Goth look just isn't your thing"

Pause.

"And if any of my clothes are stretched, you're a dead man"

Almost there, almost there...just open the door and you're a free man, Chase.


Oh. Well. ...Crap.

"Really? 'Cause, I think that shirt really showed off my awesome physique." He grinned at her in a way that he hoped was innocent and playful.

"Uh...Nope. Nothing stretched. And, if you examine them, you'll even see that they've been washed. Ready to wear immediately."

A beat.

"Well, nice to see you. Gotta jet."

Look at those eyes roll. Nico shook her head and rolled her eyes as Chase tried to play innocent. Chase was anything but innocent, after she had seen him parading around in her clothes at the masq. But she had to admit, it was pretty funny.

"Yeah, really. Actually, wait Chase. There's something I've been wanting to talk to you about"

Okay, she didn't want to talk about it but she needed to talk about it. Chase had been MIA for awhile and she was afraid that part of the reason was because of what happened in New York. That needed to be cleared up completely and then confessed. Gert was their friend and she deserved the truth...but she also had a dino with very sharp teeth that responded to her emotions.

That was the trouble with women, Chase thought, they always want to talk.

He turned around and collapsed onto one of the sofas in what could probably be described as 'melodramatic'.

"What's up?"

"Actually, can we talk about it in my room?"

Karolina and Victor were both in Hufflepuff. She did not want one of them walking in on the conversation or someone over hearing what they were talking about and relaying it to them. That would make things even messier and if Gert found out second hand..yeah, she didn't even want to think about that.

His eyes widened. That was clearly the oldest line in the book. Next to 'Let's go watch TV. I won't try anything, I swear it.'

"Are you...hitting on me? Dude, I already told you in New York. Love triangles are gay."

Oh God, Chase did NOT just say that. A facepalm was followed by a nasty glare. A quick glance was given around the room to make sure that they were the only two around before she spoke in a low voice, that almost came out as a hiss.

"God Chase! I did not mean it like that. I wanted to talk to you about what happened in New York without anyone over hearing. Karolina and Victor are both in this house. Do you really want one of them over hearing and Gert finding out what happened second hand?"

Sigh.

"And furthermore, I would not hit on you Chase because I don't like you in that way. Again, it was an accident"

"Oh. Yeah, actually, not a bad idea. We should maybe probably do that. Yes."

He stood up and motioned to Nico. "Lead the way, Black Magic Woman."

He thought about the lyrics to that song.

"Uh. Bad song choice. Ignore that. Lead the way..." He thought for a moment before finishing, "...Nico."

Oi vey, it was a wonder how Gert could put up with Chase some times. Over all he was a good guy but he had his moments where Nico just wanted to reach over and throttle him. But hey, at least he was agreeing that it was a good idea to go and talk in private. She was approaching the stairs when he said her name and she glanced over her shoulder, arching a brow.

"Yeah, Chase?"

He hadn't actually wanted anything. Just adding her name to the end of his sentence. But...she seemed annoyed enough. Think quick, Chase.

"Uh...Do you want your clothes up in your room, too?" He motioned to the clothes he had just brought back. "I mean, you never know what could happen to them, just leaving them strewn about the common room like that."

Yeah, sure. That works. I guess.

"Oh"

Bringing those up with her would be a good idea. She turned around and walked over to the clothes and held the shirt up. They really hadn't been stretched out of place. Nico wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. The clothes were slung over her arm and she headed back up the stairs.

"Thanks for bringing them back. Seeing you in them was actually pretty funny"

He shrugged, pleased with himself. "Well, you know, I am the comedic relief. And the guy that drives the...frog. I am multi-talented." He patted himself on the back and followed Nico up the stairs.

"Speaking of the Leapfrog, where is it?"

Would it even work here? Not that she was planning on taking it for a ride in the castle. That was just asking for trouble and it probably couldn't fit down the hallways. Hrn, then again, if Victor could function in here, then electronics must be operational here.

When they reached her room she opened up the door and left it open for Chase. The clothes were put back in drawer, neatly folded, and then she closed the drawer over.

He smiled at the mention of the Leapfrog, remembering his adventure with Calvin. "It's hidden in a very clever place." He stepped into Nico's room and fought a small internal war over whether or not the door should be closed. Finally, he settled for 'Open enough that no rumors could be started, but closed enough that only someone intentionally listening would overhear them.'

He sat on the floor.

"...So, New York. City."

"Right, New York.."

This week had been one uncomfortable conversation after the other for her. Nico leaned back against her dresser and rested a hand by her temple. An apologetic look formed on her face and she sighed softly.

"I'm really sorry about what I did Chase, it was so stupid. I'd never want to ruin what Gert and you have. I was so relieved that we made it out of that situation alive and got caught up in the moment."

And she was pretty sure she misplaced her emotions for someone else, but she wasn't going to bring that up.

He shrugged. "It's cool. Well, not cool, cool. But don't worry about it. So long as it doesn't happen again." He paused. "And Gert really doesn't need to find out. About anything that happened or was said that night. I definitely don't want you to be eaten by her psychic dinosaur."

"There's a no kill rule here, but that probably means instead of being eaten, we'll turn into Old Lace's chew toy"

Which would not be fun, at all. Nico didn't want to tell Gert about what happened, because she knew it was going to hurt Gert and it could really screw up her friendship with her and ruin things between Chase and her. But Gert was their friend and lying to her wasn't fair.

"But she has a right to know Chase. With our luck, she'll find out eventually and be even angrier with us for keeping it a secret for so long"

Chase frowned. That was a good point. "So you, what? Want to tell her?"

This was uncomfortable. He knows she deserves to know. He also knows he wouldn't be able to stand losing her. Especially not with Victor right there ready to snatch her away.

"I don't really want to, because I can't imagine it ending well, but we need to. I mean she'll get angry with us, but since it was an accident..I'm sure she'll forgive me in time"

Technically Chase hadn't done anything wrong. Nico was the one who had done the kissing and Chase pushed her away instead of kissing her back.

"Don't worry, I won't mention anything else that was said or done that night"

Everything else that had happened and been said..well, that was entirely Chase's call.

He sighed. This sucked. Royally.

"If you want to tell her. She should know."

He thought for a minute. "Let's tell her when Old Lace is sleeping. In a different room. A different locked room."

"Yes and we should probably plan an emergency escape route, just in case Old Lace gets out"

Better to be safe than sorry. Nico liked being in one piece thank you very much. Now they needed to decide when they wanted to talk to Gert. The sooner the better. Her hand moved away from her temple and she started to rub her arm nervously.

"How about we tell her tomorrow? I know it's a bit sudden, but that way she'll have all of tomorrow and Sunday to fume and vent and not have to miss any of her classes on Monday"

"Wow. Tomorrow. That's...soon."

He had already begun mentally preparing to lose her. He's found, over the years, that it's best to not expect good things, because it usually doesn't happen that way.

He nodded

"Yeah. Tomorrow."

"Yeah, it is.."

Victor and Karolina would probably find out about what happened in New York and then what they would they think about her? It was bad enough that she kissed Tobias while Alex and she were sort of going out, now this. But it was better than lying to Gert and keeping this ticking time bomb hidden.

"Hey, Chase? Gert told me that you've been MIA for awhile. It's not because of what happend in New York, is it?"

He rolled his eyes.

"Ugh. No. That creepy Weatherwax lady - you meet her yet? She's the chick in charge of the nurse's office, or whatever. She comes up to me all 'You. Come with me.'

"You cannot say no to her, man. You try, and she just...Stares at you. This lady could outstare frickin' Medusa.

"Anyway, next thing I know I'm knee deep in mud digging for some smelly ass herbs. This other chick, Joan, was there, too. She's in Hufflepuff, too. That's how I got the password to get in and get your clothes.

"Anyway, she keeps us there for, like, a month. No showers, no beds, hardly any food. She wouldn't even let us write owls. Not that there were any owls. Just alligators. And snakes. And mosquitoes. Mosquitoes the size of your face."

He shudders remembering it.

"So, yeah. I was out experiencing indentured servitude for a month. And then I ignored all human contact and stayed in the bath for another day. And then I slept for a while. And then I returned to the world of the living, and there was a costume party. And now..." Now. "...Here we are."
