Stephen receives the owl and decides to go to meet Katya. He is fascinated by the concept of the Anla'shok, and wonders if it would be offensive if he were to take notes while they spoke? Probably so. He could commit facts to memory well enough, anyhow. So many different cultures, brought together at this school!

He finds her, as she'd said he would, in the field near the greenhouses. He has hardly slept, and looks rather worn, but is happy to see her.

Katya was doing drills with the fighting pike. Spinning and weaving easily, sparring with an unseen partner. She was altertately opening and closing the pike to use the momentum more fully. Moving in intricate patterns favored by the Minbari, familiar to her now after so many years. Moving gracefully from one move to another. I can see why River calls it dancing. Huh, I never really noticed it before. I guess I'm not as poetic as some. She mentally shrugged off the thought and kept "dancing".

She smiled slightly as she noticed Stephen's arrival. She finished her routine with a spin that ended in a defensive stance. She straightened up closed the pike and put it in the pocket of her robes. She smiled warmly at him as she approached him.

"Hello Stephen. I'm glad you could come. Are you ok? You look a little tired."


((I was at a convention getting two more autographs of Babylon 5 characters, it was supposed to be three but Jason Carter had already left by the time we got there, and playing with Pirates and Jennie Breeden of The Devil's Panties... yeah.... I'm going to shut the hell up now. I think I had too much coffee this afternoon))

What an extraordinary weapon! Stephen had known a vast array of weaponry in his day, but never seen anything like the Minbari pike. He waved away her concerned question with a weary smile. "Tired I am, but it's no great matter. What is that weapon you have, and how is it that it opens and shuts so?"

"It's a Denn'bok, or a Minbari fighting pike. It acts like something that is spring loaded, but it doesn't have any springs." Katya looks a bit confused. "I'm really not sure how it works. I never really asked."

"The denn'bok is a collapsible quarterstaff composed of mnemonic alloys that expand from a six-inch grip to a five foot polearm. Only those trained in the ancient art of Denn'na carry these. Denn'na training among the Warrior Caste is a must as it is among the Rangers. I'm one of the few Anla'shok that carry a Denn'bok, and I'm one of a VERY few who are non-Minbari who own one."

Hands the closed pike to Stephen. "Press that button there. Just make sure the ends are facing away from you first."

Stephen manipulates the Minbari pike, very carefully. "My word," he marvels. "It is the beauty of the world. I confess, I cannot quite guess how one goes about using it in combat -- it feels to me unwieldy, the more shame to me."

It's a little tough to get used to at first, and usually take many years of practice. I've clocked myself on the head with one numerous times. I"m not a Denn'bok master by any means, but I could teach you some basics if you would like.

((I have more useless trivial shit in my head about B5 than any one should ever have save JMS. And LOTR I've got too much brain matter used up on that too))
