So, the talking hat (which was somehow more intimidating than a talking fridge) had placed Satou in Ravenclaw. The trouble was,he had no idea what that meant, and the bizarre little bug-eyed big-eared creatures he'd seen scuttling around unnerved him too much to try and ask.

He had, however, taken Kurama's promise of free room and board to heart, and a bit of wandering had lead him to the Great Hall, which happened to have a modest buffet laid out. Jackpot! Before anyone could tell him he couldn't, he took a plate and began piling on fish and chips (mostly fish).

That was the board part seen to. Now he needed to sort out the room.

"Safer," he got out. Mello had rattled him quite a bit.

"Ah." This made perfect sense. The table was sturdy and less vulnerable to attacks, and provided a good place to conceal oneself. "Are you hiding from a specific threat?"

"Everything," he rasped out. One word was about all he could manage after his confrontation with Mello.

Unity was still not especially good at reading body language or tone of voice, or any of the other mysterious signals humans understood without realising it. But Satou's distress was obvious.

She sat down, curling her legs underneath herself, and nodded again, sympathetically. "'Everything' can be overpowering. There is so much of it."

Maybe she understood, at least a little. "Too many people," he elaborated.

"Yes. And all of them different. Each with their own darkness behind the eyes. Not to mention all the animals, and plants, and - bacteria, and rocks..."

That was a bit much for Satou just then, and he wrapped his arms around his head with a groan.

"...I'm sorry. That was insensitive."

The correct thing to do was offer help. She thought for a moment.

"Would you like a scarf?"

As cautious as Satou was, he did have a weakness for beautiful women. How could he not?

"Your scarf looks warm," he said. And ohhh, it probably smelled good too.

"I made eight of them before moving on to more complex items. They appear to be equally warm. If you would like this one, I can always make another in the same colour." She took it off, holding it out to him. "If you cover your face, it will help to cut down unwanted sensory input. You may find it more convenient than staying under the table."

He took the scarf. It was still warm from being looped around her neck, and soft. He smiled at Unity sheepishly.

"Thank you. That's very kind."

The likelyhood of Satou using the scarf in an inappropriate fashion approached 100%.

She smiled. "You're welcome. I hope you find it helpful."

Unity had no idea there were inappropriate possible uses for a scarf. That whole area of human experience was one she hadn't dared to venture into too deeply yet.

He tried wrapping it around his head.

It did smell nice. Oh dear...

Unity tried to remember how to make small talk. It seemed as though she'd forgotten something - oh, of course. "What's your name? I'm Unity."

"I'm Satou," he said, somewhat muffled by the scarf.

"Pleased to meet you, Satou." There, that was the correct response. Now to think of something else.

"What House are you in?" she tried.

"That hat thing said something about Ravenclaw. That's what you're asking, right?"

"That's right. You're a new student?" She smiled. "I am in Ravenclaw as well."

"Does that, ha ha, does that mean we're going to live in the same place?"

He wondered how large these 'houses' were.

"There are individual bedrooms, but we will share the common room and bar, and the laboratory."

"A bar? A laboratory? That must be some house!" Something made him pause. "This isn't a reality show, is it?"

"It's not a house in the sense of a separate building, but rather a residential area within the castle." She frowned slightly. "And I don't know what a reality show is." She knew the words, but they didn't seem to explain each other.

"You're better off not knowing," he said with a weak laugh. "They're embarrassing just to watch."

"Some kind of performance, then?"

"Yeah. People pretending that what you're seeing is their normal life."
